Website/webspace/domain advice

Postby Lenoir » Apr 20th, '09, 00:08

Hi Chumps,
I am currently working on a website for a friend.

It's about 70% ready as a set of HTML files that just need to be pumped into a website.

I am looking for -

1.)good FREE webhosting, just for a month or two to see how people respond to the website.

if it is positive I am also looking for

2.)A good host/domain whatever. Somewhere to stick the website.

Thanks

if you have broadband at home, why not host it there? your adsl upstream won't be great, but you probably won't have many visitors. then you can find a cheap deal. but be warned that the first year might well be cheap, but come renewal ... If you don't want to adhere to W3C convention and put high-bandwith conten then you can offload your media to another source

How would I go about hosting it on my broadband?

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

How much do you know about securing Apache or the underlying operating system, about firewalls, IDSs, or DMZs? If the answer is less than "Why, everything, of course. I'm an expert", please, for the good of your health don't do it. You will get hacked. Just dump it on a free/low cost space and let the hosting company worry about it beyond changing your admin password regularly.

I'm just responding to the earlier comment Tomo.

I am very aware of the risks of hacking.

No problem. It's just that securing anything on the internet these days is a full time job.

In terms of web hosting, you get what you pay for. If you want free expect adverts being shoved on your site, crappy service/systems, and a low uptime (remember that "guaranteed 100% uptime" doesn't mean "it will never go down"), so it's really not worth the hassle even for a short period of time

I use Aventure, or send me a PM and I might be able to do you some ultra-cheap/free hosting for literally a month or two: after that I'll either help you move to a host of your choice or charge you my going rate on-going

You can expect this sort of thing from commercial hosting too, if you pay £5 per month.

Sorry

I'd sort of missed the point that you want untrusted people to access your site. The recent incident with card collection tells us that even the professionals (read: one-man-band with a webserver) can get compromised.

As Tomo says, unless you can take a risk-based view better to find an alternate.

I can't argue with that :)

I'll message you tomorrow Kolm, using a temporary freewebs one at the moment and it's doing quite well.

I'm not technical, but I needed a few different websites for different potential markets. They are mainly for bookers to access - I am not too worried about the public seeing them yet. I use vistaprint.com, and it costs me less than ten euro a month.
In addition my website is co-ordinated with my business cards, the magnetic signs I put on my car or van, the t-shirt I wear while setting up and breaking down, the banner I put on the back of the stage, etc. All done very professionally, very quickly, and very cheaply.

Windows Office Live Small Business?
If it is for a business, that is?

http://smallbusiness.officelive.com/fre ... ss-website

Free for a couple of years if you go .co.uk :)

Although I'm not sure if you can upload your own docs - you may have to use templates
