Non-magic competition with magic-related prize ........

Postby moonbeam » Apr 24th, '09, 11:39

As you may (or may not) remember, when I received Tagged by Richard Sanders, I also received a free VHS video of Daid Roth's expert coin magic made easy - volume 2.

Well, after nearly 5 months of it laying un-opened, gathering dust on my bedside cabinet - I've decided to offer it as a prize in a lil' competition.

Basically, I'm after a mnemonic that will help me remember all the birthstone months and their corresponding stones. Please note that I'm after traditional birthstones; not zodiac stones ...... Ruby is the zodiac stone for Capricorn; but it is the birthstone for July (which is what I'm after).

The list I have is as follows:

Jan - Garnet
Feb - Amethyst
Mar - Bloodstone or Aquamarine - can't seem to find out which one
April - Diamond
May - Emerald
June - Pearl
July - Ruby
Aug - Peridot
Sep - Sapphire
Oct - Opal
Nov - Topaz
Dec - Turquoise

The person that compiles the easiest (in my opinion) mnemonic to remember the list, wins the video, it's as simple as that - nothing to pay - I'll pay postage to mainland UK.

You can enter as many times as you want (fair usage policy applies  ). Don't PM me - post your ideas on here and I'll let you know who's winning and who, eventually wins  .

If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Go And Buy (or Acquire) Diamond Earrings Please. Really Polished Shiny Ones. Thanks Tom. (You could also end with Ta Ta as in thanks if you can remember it)

Not bad so far :P .

Extra points will be awarded for being able to distinguish between the 2 T's and the 2 P's. So, for example, I quite like Harry Guiness's mnemonic but the "thanks tom" at the end, doesn't help me remember which one is topaz and which one is turquoise :? .

Well if you change it to Tom Thanks the To of Tom is Topaz and the PL in Please triggers PearL and the P....D in PolisheD triggers Polidot (They are the next most prominent phonetic in the word)

Wouldn't it be easier to just sit down for half-an-hour and memorise the list by rote? It's only twelve items and wouldn't take long to memorise.

I wasn't trying to rain on your parade, by the way. Just trying to help, is all. ;) And seeing as I don't have an entry for this competition, I'll go away now. Good luck, all.

Go And Buy Diamonds, Emeralds (and) Pearls............Remember, Pour Sugar Over Topaz (it) Twirls.

By using the words pearls and topaz any confusion over the repeated first letters is removed, and using a rhyming mnemonic makes it easier to remember the mnemonic lol!

If the two small words in brackets (that help it scan) are confusing, just take them out!

:D
