Card Magic, Martial Arts and a bad back

Postby neil_the_newbie » Apr 25th, '09, 08:02

Hi everyone.
When I was a kid I remember picking up a paul daniels book and failing miserably at my attempts to do any of the tricks. I didnt pursue magic but whenever it was on tv i loved to watch it. About the same time I started martial arts - a pursuit that has taken up the last 30 years of my life and taken me to both Europe and the USA to train and teach. I sustained a back injury a couple of years ago and am now taking a 2 year break from martial arts. I have decided to use that time to learn the card magic. I am willing to invest alot of hours to do this!
I'm new to magic and on the Royal Road To Card Magic via the DVD (4 disc set!) and the book. I really prefer to learn via dvd but i like to have the aid of a book as well. I am hoping that someone can advise me on 2 things:
1) Where can I track down someone that will teach me 1 and 1 on card magic? I feel a mentor would be good!
2) Is there a dvd of Expert Card Technique that I could use alongside the book (for when the times comes).

Thank you in advance for any comments!

Hi neil.
Welcome to TM
I don't think theres a video for Expert card technique(I could be wrong), there is many other DVDs that teach the same sort of thing. I think there is a DVD for Expert at the card table which covers a lot of stuff. Hope this helps.

Hi Neil

You have a very similar background to me. I also practised various martial arts for about 25 years but eventually had to give up completely a few years ago due to neck and back problems

Although I've done magic for about 16 years I've never bothered with cards but I'm sure there are plenty of good DVDs out there.

I would suggest joining a local magic club

Hiya, welcome to TM. I used to do a bit of Karate and kick boxing but not to any really good standard.

Hi and welcome, I would start with the basics of cards, that will take long enough. As for MA I love my MMA just dont get involved.

Welcome Neil!

As we are talking about Martial Arts, I used to take my Ju Jitsu pretty seriously when i was younger, However when we relocated to the Midlands from Essex i tried a few different martial arts but there wasn't an equivalent that i enjoyed on the same level.

Anyway after rambling on welcome, All i can suggest is keep at it!

Hi Neil,

Welcome to TM. I'm also an ex martial arts fan - dodgy knees and a broken foot finally stopped me training! I'm in Evesham so not too far away from you.

The house of magic in Stourbridge runs magic classes. PM me if this is of interest and I will send you some more information. If you haven't been to the house of magic you should go along anyway just to spend a fortune in the shop!

Craig.
