Star Trek

I can't believe that nobody has started a topic on this yet...

I went to see the new Star Trek movie last night.

Keep in mind that I'm a big fan, and was very dubious about the whole idea of resurrecting the old characters with a new cast. And in the past couple of decades, Trek seems to have worked best on TV than in cinemas - DS9 and Voyager especially played with some great ideas that were too outlandish or bizarre for a big screen venture...

So I was all set for disappointment.

My jaw was hanging open from the first frame.

This movie is phenomenal.

The new cast are superb.
The storyline is superb.
What it does to the Star Trek universe as fans know it is radical and brilliant.
And it manages to be sometyhing that the previous Trek movies never were - a bleedin' rollercoaster!
It's real edge-of-your-seat stuff.

I want to see it again. NOW!

I'm a happy Petey. :)

Yeah I'm dying to see it but I've had two gigs and a massive party in the last 3 evenings! Tonight! Like Pete I'm a big Trekkie but I've heard so many great things from fans that I'm not worried!

Caught it yesterday and absolutely loved it... going back Tuesday to catch it again.

The comical tid-bits are priceless and how the characters play off each other, even the touch of parody between them re: the original cast... totally on spot!

But did you catch the big bit of trivia at the end of the movie? The last 3 minutes?

I'm not so sure on this. Saw it a few days ago and came out smiling but I'm just not sure.

Yes it's a rollercoaster, far more entertaining and visual than most of the previous Trek movies and certainly more up to date but...

The cast all do an excellent job, with the possible exception of poor Anton Yelchin, obviously, as a more minor character, requested to do more or an impression than a reimagining and damn near choking to death on his own mock russian but...

It hasn't been dumbed down as much as i expected, it certainly has been dumbed down spectacularly but at no point does Kirk say Fo' Shizzle, but...

No unforgivably horrendous errors were made, with the possible exception of Uhura's endless Spock groping there is nothing in there that is not Star Trek....but...

I think it's JJ Abrams, his stuff all feels the same to me, slickly produced, well directed, well written and glossy yet somehow ultimately soulless and corporate, feeling more like an advert or music video than a film, and Star Trek should have soul...but...

I don't know, I'm gonna have to go and watch it again i think, long time since a film has been so hard to decide about.
whatever i eventually feel about the film tho, Simon Pegg and, surprisingly, Karl Urban, make excellent Scotty & Bones.

The Uhura bit was the only bit I wasn't sure about, to be honest. I actually really liked Chekhov's accent, and agreed, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban definitely made the film. In fact, all the performances were great and it was a great film :)

In the original series, Uhura definitely had a thing for Spock. As did Nurse Chapel. He was either too naiive to notice or too vulcan to recipricate. In the new movie, his decision-making isn't nearly as clear-cut.

I had no problems with that at all.
