Which trick?

Postby ouch-kabibble » Feb 4th, '05, 21:04

Hey guys,

Its my birthday March 3rd and am looking for a cool trick that I can use in the real world. I have a slight buzz about coins but otherwise am completely free to suggestion. I have about £35 max. Any ideas?

Im also gonna start a small show for charity called ' Chicanery' and will use heirloom, 22 bullet catch and some good trusty sponge balls. I'd be grateful for any suggestions. :D

Thanks

If you want to get into IT, then get The Spider Pen... I've jst bought one this week and am thoroughly enjoying it at the moment.

Otherwise, my only advice is LISTEN TO MAGICDISCOMAN.

He knows his stuff. Inside out. And backwards.

Another idea would be to check out the S.T.El.Th jig as this will allow you to easily make those little bands of IET that prove so very useful.

what sort of age range are your target audience that would help us a lot,
http://www.loonybin.co.uk/21080/info.php?p=1&pno=0 now do a die tray my next purchase that should go down with most audiences verry well.

Ok well I'd suggest Penna Coin, you should enjoy this as it's a very nice and cheap coin trick. Most coin tricks are sleight of hand or very expensive gimmicked coins however:

Dynamic coins is a classic coin trick for around a tenner along with the lesser known Coin squeeze. http://www.penguinmagic.com/europe/product.php?ID=392&source=20548

Finally on coins you may want to look at a raven, http://www.penguinmagic.com/europe/product.php?ID=86 which allows you to disappear coins in the blink of an eye.

Disappearing card case http://www.worldmagicshop.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=53&ref=3 gets good reactions and is inexpensive at around £5 and easy to do.

Currently the "Works" has a very good general magic book by Nicholas Einhorn for £4.99 I'm not sure it's current name as it has changed. Might be "the art of magic and sleight of hand" a real bargain.

ID will always be a classic and the new Phil plus deck looks very good. http://www.alakazam.co.uk/acatalog/Hot_List_2.html#a349

hope that helps.

Im doing the show for kids about my age (12-15) and am not really prepared to buy that big a props.

Happy Toad, through the years I must of bought all of these tricks about twice. I'm looking to branch out into other fields, such as mentalism and card manipulation. Im forever scanning through magic sites and thinking 'Oh that looks cool' and then buying it. Then I would find it was a lame plastic gimmick and keep it at the back of my draw.

For my birthday I would prefer something I will actually use, a book or DVD maybe, or a nice set of gimmicked coins. Im into sankeys stuff and am going to see derren brown on April 1st.

Which trick shall be my next? You tell me.

dont get me wrong im all for magicians branching out into other fields but personally i dont think kids (12-15) are the best audiences for mentalism... watching a guy rub his chin while saying stuff like "think of someones name who means a lot to you..." isnt really the attention grabbing stuff needed for kids shows.... but i could be wrong

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

oh well then 12 - 15 arn't realy kids they are teenagers which your mum and dad should have told you are the worst audience to get started in.

that said this group tend to enjoy mystical stuff and psychic magic like the humble haunted key and pk stuff.
sankeys three ring circus and his new ring thingy, name escapes me but theres a review or review request on this site somewere, also consider magius capsual and his dvd's no card tricks and revolutionary coin magic.

rope tricks and similar daryl stuff like dicey dots, were the spots on a dice disapear and reappear on a paddle go down well too, scotch and soda as previousely mentioned is great fore thid type of age group as is hopping halfs, go for the expanded version to give you two of the best magic props in coin work, also consider butter coin (american version is still the best ,50p a close second).

This is bringing back memories of my second stage appearance, when I was 18 and did a show in front of about 2-300 people, most of whom were about the same age as me (it was when I was at college).

Oh yes, and the microphone didn't work properly.

Surprisingly, it went quite well.

I get the impression your audience isn't going to be that big, but please think about your material. In my opinion, 'Heirloom' is a terrible choice for even a moderately big audience. An audience of teenagers is even worse.

Think about what is important to make that effect work well. Think about the need to tell a story and the patience the audience needs. Think about how well it works if your audience feels a little nostalgic (not something associated with 12 year olds). Think about how the trick ends and whether that really works for anything more than a small group of people. It's a great effect, but save it for when it will have most impact.

The Nicholas Einhorn book is good and I got a copy for the same price (£4.99) at Borders on Oxford Street.

Have a look at volume 1 of Dan Harlan's series 'Packs Small, Plays Big', if you want ideas for a stage show. I haven't seen the DVD myself, but have seen some of it in a trailer and the material looks suitable. High energy stuff, with a lot of fun.

All 3 volumes are good and are not exactly your standard text book as they contain anecdotes, thoughts and a few other nuggets of non-magical instruction stuff. Expensive but good value for money. I think there may be a review somewhere on here - have you tried a 'Search' at all?

===============================================

Update 15 mintutes later! There isn't a review as such but there's a thread under Reviews Request - http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic1543.php - which gives a lot of useful information.

I have used "twisting the aces" with both poker and stage sized cards, and it is a great routine with cards.....just a note, I use the A-2-3-4 of one suit, and have the audience count outloud with me, it keeps their attention on the trick

Revolutionary Coin Magic is deffinatley a great place for killer coin effects.

Even completely impromtu, you can impress tons of people. The routines are not very complicated and easy for people to follow, they often do not require patter.

Definatley a great dvd for coin tricks

The spinning £1 coin effect is cool, ( no magnets ).

You balance a £1 coin on top of another £1 coin then the top £1 coin spins around then finally falls off when you want it to .
