An introduction.

Hello everyone!
I'm a soldier about to deploy and am contemplating my options after I return and retire from the military. Having thought over what I consider my passions versus my natural talents, I've decided to take a few books on magic with me on deployment and see if that something I wish to pursue professionally.

To begin, I've bought 13 Steps to Mentalism, Royal Road to Card Magic, The Expert at the Card Table, Strong Magic, Modern Coin Magic, Tricks of the Imagination and Prism. Some of that was impulsive (ie: Prism and Tricks of the Imagination) but most were selected with the assistance of extremely helpful magic shop owner. I figured I'd try a little bit of everything to see where exactly my personal inclinations are, although I admit that Mentalism is very appealing for its lesser use of props and (as I see it) higher psychological impact.

I've also taken a look at getting The Tarbell Course, Card College, and Cold Reading and some others. Some may say that I have enough to last me a good long time to master (and I would generally agree), I am informed that the distractions in the desert are few and far between and I wish to make the most of my time while over there.

Thank you and all the best.

Hi and welcome

I would not underestimate Mark Wilsons complete course in magic its a great starting place which I keep going back to.
You will need to read 13 steps before attacking Prism but both good

Keep well and keep us informed of your progress

kind regards

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! I am grateful for the information that I can find here but I seem to have bit off a little more than I can chew. With so many excellent books to draw from I'm finding focus to be a little difficult.

Should I beginning with a single subject and focus until I feel generally competent before trying to supplement those techniques before moving on to another branch? I figure that sleight of hand magic appears to be an excellent skill to have and one which reward persistent practice while mentalism may be a tough sell to start off with as it relies more on the performer's, well, performance to properly deliver the effect. Is that accurate?
