Geocaching

Postby mark_c1975 » May 17th, '09, 09:21

Hello all,

Is anyone else here a fan of Geocaching?

If you have never tried it before, go to geocaching.com and check it out. Click on 'Hide and Seek a Cache' and then 'search with Google maps'. Zoom in on where you live. I bet there are tons of caches to find near you.

My obsession started when someone hid one in the woods behind my house.

It's good fun... honest!

Get out and try to find it.

You can download an app for the iPhone so you can search for them wherever you are. I went round to my friends house last week and had a look. There were 4 caches within walking distance, so we got out and about to find them.

We found 2 out of the 4. One was a log book inside a waterproof box which we signed and left for the next Geocachers to find.

It's great for those with kids too, a bit like a massive treasure hunt.

There are quite a few near me. Might go out and investigate when my Sunday boredom gets the better of me :)

Lawrence...

The reward is finding your first cache, then finding another, and another...

There's a guy whose profile says he has found over 3000. I reckon he's lying!

And by "GPS system" you mean iphone, of course :)

And now that I've found out they have geocaching apps for the iphone, that's me doing it once I get an iphone...

Wow! There's one right in Bolton town centre. I could try for that one.

I've always liked the idea of geocaching -- certainly more interesting than just walking aimlessly. But it's not really a practical proposition for me, since I can't get out to the sort of places where it's safe and pleasant to ramble.

You could create a cache near your house, that you can see from an upstairs window, and watch people as they search for it.

Make it really hard to find and watch them wandering around!

Could be fun - the view from my window is a busy dual carraigeway, it would be great to see them dodging the buses and lorries  !

Sounds like great fun!

I notice you're in Horsham.

This could turn competitive.

Just like Nicholas Cage and Sean Bean in National Treasure!
