It is a shame that we have to be so secretive, I think the best method is the one that they use (or used to use) here, where you tell them what magic you do know rather than answering pointless questions that only show your knowledge of magical history not it's practice.
We (that is those of us left here) are always willing to help beginners just like we were helped when we were starting out, but we can't do it in public, my advice is find your nearst magic dealer and go in and chat with them about what you like to do, see if they can recommend anything to you, however, beware of anything that says 'amaze your friends and family' or 'no practice needed' as these are usually designed for people with no real interest.
If you happen to live within a reasonable distance of Kettering you could come and visit me on a Saturday at
Studio 9 address and contact details are on the website. I work here on a Saturday and would be glad to help anyone who comes in. NB this is a blatent plug for our shop, it is great you even get to play with the tricks rather than just stand next to the counter asking to see things!
