Richard Osterlind covers ungimmicked blindfold techniques in Easy To Master Mental Miracles Vol 2

John Archer also has a full DVD dedicated to ungimmicked blindfold technique.

There's a lot of good stuff in 13 Steps too.

I do a lot of blindfold work, but don't use gimmicked blindfolds, because I find there's no need - and the lengths you go to to prove to an audience that you genuinely can't see, with ungimmicked materials can be a lot of fun.

It depends on what you need it for. Do you want something you can slip on quickly during an effect? Do you need to be able to see through it? Is it an integral part of your effect? Must it stand up to examination?
Any dealer will supply you with a range of blindfolds that will stand up to limited examination. The one I tend to user is the black bag that you pull over your head. It goes on and off quickly and allows reasonably good vision. It can also be examined (a little).
For a more convincing blindfold, suitable for something in which the blindfold is an integral part of the act and not an incidental, such as a blindfold drive, try Will Dexter's Sealed Vision book, I think available from trickshop.com . Also try the DVD on the blindfold act by John Archer. Both give the full workings.

I used to use one of these. I made no mention of it being a blindfold, I simply had a spectator confirm that it was a heavy, opaque bag. If I put something in it, you can't see what it is. And if I hold it up to the light, nothing gets through.

She agreed that it was above board, to which I added:

"Well it should be. It's US Government issue"- at which point I pulled it over my head.

Never failed to get a laugh. I'd never try it in a tourist melting-pot like the Edinburgh Fringe, though!

Plastics bags....you can see through them but you do give the public a good laugh when you start to hypoventilate.

Max Maven recommends a bandana or large handkerchief with diagonally opposite corners rolled into the middle. You can easily place it over someone's eyes so they can confirm it's opaque, yet ensure that when it goes over your eyes you're only looking through a single layer of cloth.

I think psychologically it's much stronger than a pre-made blindfold. Same for the bag, I guess.

I'd like to do blindfold work but am short-sighted; it's not something insurmountable but does make the venture slightly more expensive!

Oh, and generally speaking I think blindfolded effects work best when the audience wouldn't know how you did what you did even without the blindfold.

I always use a black scarf, you can fold them fairly easily to give as much or little vision as you need.

if you use the travel-blindfold things, people are used to those - and know that you can't see through them...

corinda has all you need, then you can just go off and buy some material and make your own...
