MIDLANDS - MAGIC JUDGE WANTED

Postby dat8962 » May 12th, '09, 17:52

Is there anyone in the Midlands who would like to volunteer to be a judge at the Leamington & Warwick Close up competition next Wednesday night?

Wednesday 20th from between 19:00 and 19:30. Finger buffet and some drinks and a complimentary bottle of wine and the honour of meating a certain Mandrake if he can still make it

Mandrake has assured me that he's going to be just a little kinder to the magicians than a certain Simon Cowell

I'd enjoy that, just because I got to watch. However, sadly:
1) My qualifications for being a judge would (apart from living in the Midlands) be 'questionable'.
2) I hate judging competitions - because I don't want anyone to be disappointed.
3) On that day I'm off working somewhere so I quite possibly wouldn't be back in time to make the compo anyway.

Bah.

Thanks and sorry to hear that you're working :? (pleased for you really  )

If anyone else is interested you DO NOT need to be a pro level magician to judge this. Just to have a basic idea about magic and performing so that you can spot any mistakes that a lay judge may miss OR be able to appreciate the smoothness of the sleights used.

Marking will be done in secret so you won;t be letting anyone down.

anyone?????????

You can both argue between you as to which one of you relates to which but I'd have said the Simon Cowell and the Piers Morgan of TM

It was a fantastic night of magic, 6 performers in the competition, two more for the sheer hell of it, a great raffle (I won a rather nice bottle of wine!) and a buffet - it doesn't get much better than that!

Performances were excellent, different styles, and very varied although similar rope routines were done by three performers. Each had between 8 and 10 minutes to perform with only a few moments in between each act so it was over an hour of solid magic and they all entertained us well - so well I forgot all about drinking my glass of plonk until after the last performer! It genuinely was difficult to decide who was the winner but it had to be done, I'd happily sit and watch them all over again any day - thanks for a great night Leamington & Warwick, hope you have a great Magic Day on June 24th ( http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic29630.php ) !

And for all those who may be wondering, I can confirm that my fellow judge Sexton Blake looks just like his avatar in exactly the same way that I look like mine... 8)

Congratulations to Steven Buxton on winning the Leamington and Warwick Magical Society’s annual Close-up Competition which took place on Wednesday 20th May at the Cubbington Sports and Social Club, Leamington Spa. Steven and five others competed for the Frank Allan Trophy in a closely fought competition that was judged by two magic judges and one lay judge. Steven now goes forward to represent the Society at the Midlands Champion of Champions competition that is part of this year's Leamington Day of Magic on Wednesday 24 June.

Sorry for the delay in posting - I've been stupidly busy. However, I simply need to second everything Mandy has said. It really was a pleasure to watch all the performers.
