Doc Shiels and the Loch Ness Monster!

Postby themagicwand » Jun 3rd, '09, 15:11

Imagine my surprise when reading this month's Fortean Times to find an article about the great Loch Ness monster hoax of 1977 (that classic picture of the dinasour style head popping above the water), and to discover in said article that the whole hoax was perpetrated by none other than Doc Shiels!

In the article the good Doc is described as a frequent Fortean Times contributor back in the 70's and a man who had bought his doctrate for £5 in the States. Doc claimed to have caused Nessie to rise by "telepathy".

Well, you learn something new everyday. Well done Doc Shiels. Makes my magic wand shop look like small potatoes.

doc and sea serpents go wayyyyyyyyyyy back. Indeed, there have been a couple of bbc documentarys made about him, and his abilities to charm a sea serpent in cornwall, using an "old druid trumpet".
he would stand on the cliffs, complete with robes, and blast this battered horn out to sea....

all total B.S, But amazing fun!

The Shiels effect has been one of my favourite reads of the last year. A truly outstanding man who obviously had a lot of fun doing what he did. I love his entertaining with esp book as well. It's full of terribly corny cop outs for avoiding doing genuine effects.
