PayPal problem

Postby TheStoner » Jun 17th, '09, 14:45

I've just received this incoherent email from "service@paypal.co.uk" -

On , we attempted to transfer from your bank account, ending in . This transfer was returned by your bank on for the reason below:

There was a bank processing error.

As a result, this bank account has been removed from your PayPal account. Please contact your bank for more information or add a new bank account. Please do not contact PayPal because this is entirely an issue between the account holder and their bank.

Yours sincerely,
PayPal

I haven't cut anything out of this email - the places where there should be a date, amount and account number are all blank. My bank account details are still showing against my PayPal account so, despite the comment above it doesn't seem to have been "removed". My bank don't know anything about it, so it looks like a PayPal screw up. Has anyone else ever had anything like this before?

report it as a spam mail to paypall, and they will get back with an answer.

ive had 3 very convincing mails from people today, all fake.

also, log into your account, because if it's kosher, it will show there.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

I didn't know that - where do I look? Would it show in the "account history" amongst all the payments, or is it somewhere else specially dedicated to a record of emails?

Simply forward the email to spoof@paypal.com

They'll get back to you very quickly and let you know whether or not it's legit.

The way this scam sometimes works is that somewhere in the email, there will be a link. You get this cryptic message, which is designed to worry you. The first thing most people will do is go to their account by clicking the link. The link looks like it goes to Paypal, but it's a fake site. You put your Paypal login details in and you just get an error page. In the meantime, the site server has logged and forwarded your Paypal credentials to whoever the scammer is.

I never, ever click links in emails any more. I copy and paste them into the browser and examine the URL properly if I need to confirm.

Yeah, good point. But there was no link in the email or any attachments or anything like that. Bizarre!

What do the email headers say?

It all looks genuine. I think it's more likely in this case that PayPal have made a mistake rather than it being a phishing email. I've emailled them and will now wait and see what happens...

If there was no link, then maybe it was just a c**k up. A friend of mine had someone spend a fortune through his Paypal account for a few days when his mum got one of these emails and promptly tried to log in to see what the problem was. Needless to say, he wasn't too happy, but got the money back.

Hmm. Isn't it Paypal who say they always use your full name in the subject line of all emails? I'm sure it's either Paypal or Ebay.

Yes they say your full name will be at the start (not "Dear PayPal Member") and my name was correctly at the top of the email I got, which is why I think it is genuinely from PayPal, but is probably a mistake on their part. We shall see.
