There's something very similar described in Kenton Knepper's "Twists and Trances" as a pseudo-trance effect, in which an ordinary book becomes a foreign language (or naughty pictures).

With Hypnobook, you flip through the book showing everyone the pages within. Then, you snap your fingers, your participant has trouble clearly reading aloud the pages in front of his eyes. Another snap and he cannot read or pronounce the text at all! Snap again and his vision returns to normal. Perfect for hypnotists and Mentalists alike!
