Well, thank you for potentialy saving me a fiver anyway! I downloaded a voucher earlier this year for £5 off at Borders, eventually found a book I wanted, offered the voucher which, after three false starts, was scanned accepted, handed over some book tokens recieved at Christmas, also fumbled then scanned and the balance to pay was all of 49p. I was very tempted to produce a credit card but decided enough was enough!

Thanks for the tip. Personally, I mostly buy secondhand books now; books are not that cheap and if you read like I do, then you'll be skint in no time.

49p hehe. Nice. Borders are worth keeping an eye on as they often have some really nice discount vouchers available.

I do prefer 2nd hand when I can find a decent shop. You can leave me all day in a good 2nd hand bookshop, literally. They just have that something about them. The smell, the atmosphere, being surrounded by all that knowledge and stories. There's nothing quite like it. My favourite shop in Bradford closed down a few years ago and I've struggled to find one as good. There's loads of used books online, but postage costs mean you still pay almost as much as new sometimes.

Green Metropolis are quite good for secondhand books, as are Amazon and Play. Most of GM's books cost £3.75.

Whilst on holiday in Devon last week we went into Dawlish and there's a superb second hand bookshop in Beach Street - not the easiest street to find but it's very narrow, very 18th Century, still has a thatched house and the centre drainage channel in the road for, er, liquid effluent. Not that it's used for that these days of course! However, back to the plot... The shop is crammed floor to rafters with books, newspapers, magazines of all kinds, very well laid out and organised so you can see the different topics. The space between the bookshelves is just about enough for one person and the proprietor sits right by the door behind stacks of stuff so he's not immediately noticeable! I found 7 very interesting second hand magic books, total cost was £25 and I'm now regretting not grabbing the rest of the stuff on that shelf. There's a great section on magick, psychic events, séances and that kind of thing for those interested in including the darker type of effects.

or online, I love WWW.ABEBOOKS.CO.UK (.com for non uk)

But yep, I love being in a real bricks second hand book shop, there's something special in the search and in the finding of a surprise collection of books, and the smell is special too.

I have spent a small fortune with abebooks over the years, it's a great site and there are real bargains if you are after something specific. I'm glad you agree on the smell of bookshops too. :)

Replicant, thanks for the link to Green Metropolis, I'd never heard of them before.

I have been known to get lost for days in secondhand book shops. Now I have to leave a trail of breadcrumbs behind me, just in case.
