Just out of interest, I wondered how many people who have purchased this book have simply not been able to induce anyone at all?

I'm going to buy this regardless, as it's something I've always been interested in, but wondered if some people struggled with making it work?

Is hypnosis like other art forms - as in certain people just don't 'click' with it and are therefore never really that successful with it?

One final question - should I just get the book to start with and then the DVD or, get both together from Jacquin?

From what I can gather the success rate after reading this is very high,for those who it wasnt, they either, wernt that interested or they dont really have enouhg confidence to pull it off...other than that it should work for everyone!

I'm a hypnotherapist who was trained to use the long, wordy inductions with clients, which is appropriate for that setting. Having never had any training in stage hypnosis and rapid inductions (except Erickson's handshake), I bought RIP out of curiosity.

Ignoring all my training and just using Ant's examples, I set about doing some rapid and instant inductions on people. It worked first and every time.

The golden rule you must remember: If you aren't convinced of your ability to induce a trance (if such a thing exists!), you will fail every time. You must put yourself into that mode, much like an actor who adopts the persona of their character. Get that right and everything else will fall into place.

Thanks for the comments and your thoughts. My question arose after speaking to a musician friend of mine. He was asking if anyone could be a good magician, or is it like music where some people (who are musically talented just can't grasp certain instruments - but succeed at others). It just got me thinking this morning if hypnosis was the same.

From discussion with friends prior to this post, and also a key theme in these replies is the self belief that is required. Going off on a tangent a little, I find that is the case with my magic in general. For example, I struggled with a push-off double L. move for ages, and when eventually got it down in practice, I was nervous about performing it for real - until I gave myself the self-belief that "I can do this move 100% - even in front of people" coupled with the confidence that I now have to jazz and patter my way around mistakes (because ultimately, so what if it goes wrong!!).

I now know that I needed that self belief to make the transition from perfect in practice to perfect in performance - even though my actual skill level at performing the mechanics of the move hadn't changed.

It's an interesting topic isn't it - self belief and just what you can accomplish with it (a topic I feel could be a separate post entirely - and not just applied to magic, but life in general).

Some people adore certain musicians and are convinced they are superb. Others listening to the same performer just hear noise. It's the same with any art. It's so subjective, that the word "good" becomes meaningless. Hypnosis (if it really exists) it has been argued, is a tool. The hypnotist merely teaches the client/spec how to use the tool. Well or badly depends on the hypnotist and the client! There's no such thing as hypnosis.

Self belief is something I wish I had more of! Despite my preaching about how belief in yourself can shape the way you use something like hypnosis, I'm incredibly bad at taking my own advice in other areas of life. Go figure. I suspect I'm far from alone though

I think the main talent isn't getting down moves perfectly, or having a superb technique. We're entertainers, performers... Within these two words lies the real talent.
Get confidence by just doing it

I agree with Iceman. I've been practicing card moves for several years now and I'm getting pretty good however I was never very good at actually performing the tricks to an audience because I lacked confidence in my abilities and this came over in the performance.

I've now started learning a nice selection of self-working tricks so I can focus on the presentation of the trick without worrying about screwing up a move. Once I have more confidence in my actual performance, I intend to move on to more complicated stuff.

I've read RIP a couple of times and I've really thought about trying stuff on people but at this point, I don't think I have the confidence to be The Hypnotist, and so I'm going to reread it some more and work on my self-belief.
