Where can I buy a Gypsy Wallet/Envelope?

Postby Wishmaster » Jun 29th, '09, 23:03

Hi all,

I'm after one of those wallet affairs as supplied with Deep Astonishment II by Paul Harris. It's a fairly large, leather (?) concertina wallet with a cord that wraps around a clip on the front to fasten it. Richard Osterlind uses one for....erm I can't remember the effect name now....the one where he uses scissors to cut a newspaper column.

Anyway, I've heard them called Gypsy Wallet and Gypsy Envelope. But, I'm stumped as to who might sell them. I've googled and looked through all the UK magic and stationery suppliers I can think of. No dice. Of course, now that I can't find one, I want it even more!

I'm not fussed whether it's leather or plastic.

Any help greatly appreciated as always.

Ta,
Wishmaster.

I think that magicshop.co.uk used to have them. I'm at work at the moment and it's been a little while since I watched the Osterlind DVD so will have to wait until I get home before I can verify but give their website a look and see what you find (any commerce sites are blocked on my work PC so I can't check).

Where Can I Buy a Gypsy Wallet/Envelope.

The cutting newpaper column is called Clip Line Deluxe.

I have recently persuaded a magic Student of mine NOT to use it, Mainly because of the artificiallity of sealing the cuttings in envelopes, put them behind his back to select one. Then there is 'the' prediction in an envelope.

It's what I dislike about 4th. Dimensional Telepathy as well. All this unnatural sealing in envelopes to choose one.

And wouldn't a Shaxon envelope or the Ted Lesly one do your other trick better than a wallet?

It did strike me that the original method, often in Boy's Books of Magic, wherein you take one coliumn, run the scissors down it then cut at that point is more straightforward. AND if you offered half a dozen, apparently, different pages of advert columns to choose from well--
Replacements --again there are plenty of free papers about. Collect them, from your neighbours.

OrderD29 - Cheers for the tip. I couldn't find them on their site, so emailed them earlier.

That's the fella! Thanks Allen, I spent this afternoon at work racking my brain on that one :D

I'll take on board what you say about the method and thanks for the input, it helps. I don't know the method of creating the Shaxon type envelopes, but I do have some I made in the style of those done by Ted Lesly.

I need to go away and think a bit more about it. I'm still not confident about adapting routines for myself, so suggestions like yours are welcome. Thanks.

A very small (husband and wife) company called Earthworks does hand leatherwork and bookbinding. They would probably be willing to make you a wallet to your specifications. It could be worth getting in touch with them, at any rate.

They're kept pretty busy -- current waiting time for books is nearly a month. I've ordered a blank book from them, which they're finally working on right now, and which I'm eagerly looking forward to receiving at about the end of this week! Their prices are very reasonable, considering the amount of work involved.

The only contact details I have for them is through eBay, where they sell a lot of blank books and notebooks:

I know you're not supposed to use eBay to contact people for "outside" sales, but you could try. They do say they're willing to consider special orders. You could always write to them rather than going through eBay (their address is at the bottom of their "about me" page).

you may also think about getting Mark Leverages envelope dvds, and books.( available from his site).
they cover more or less all the basic types, and many, many, more.
