Color Change Deck Routine

Postby Yano » Jul 4th, '09, 04:42

Hi this is just a routine i came up with. I've been thinking of ways to add more to this routine. However i really think its quite alot of content already. Any feedback would be nice. I'm open to any ideas, thanks in advance.

Well, it fooled me (kinda). Your technique is very good- those color changes fooled the heck out of me. However, I would suggest you cut out any actions you can and simplify. Rather than adding more to it, I would cut some stuff down to make the whole effect more straightforward.

Check out, if you can find it, Andy Galloway's Diverting Card Magic for a wonderful colour changing deck.

That was pretty good; an accomplished performance, all things considered. My favourite colour changing deck effect is by Kenton Knepper. It's brilliant.

It's actually by Ben Highway (Renato on TM).

Ah, sorry Ben. I did know that but had forgotten because looking at this page...

...suggests it is a KK effect (until you take a closer look at the DVD case and realise that KK presents it!)

Sorry for being stupid, but I didn't see anything on the video clip. Chap 1 showed a red backed deck. Chap 2 selected a queen. Chap 1 showed that the queen had a red back. Chap 2 seems to think he's seen a three-legged-walrus. Chap 1 hands out a blue-backed joker and the red deck for inspection.

Now, KK is a blooming genius but I still don't understand this demonstration.

It's not something that can be experienced on video. See my review (under electronic reviews) for the effect.

Basically, to the spectator, the color of the deck changed.

thats my favourite too - i base my presentation of perception though, rather than its just a colour change...

i performed this at a talkmagic meeting in london, and a few people said it was the best thing they'd seen in a long, long time for that type of thing...

Yep, that about sums it up. You won't get the full impact of this effect from watching it on video. It has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

I think I get it now. I've researched colour changing decks on the interweb (including some tutorials), have read the review and have rewatched the video.

I think I understand how the spectator is led to believe that the deck changes colour.

But is this effect only for a one-on-one situation? Does it work on a stage? I wonder if the audience management for an individual extends to a whole room of people?

That is beautifully done. He plays the spec like a violin. It is hard to spot how it works unless you know what things to look for and why they are important. The deception is very clever indeed. I love this performance.

Thanks for posting Replicant

Thanks for the kind words, chaps! It's one of my favourite creations, and Kenton has added some lovely touches to it.

Aporia, due to the nature of the effect and methodology I understand the slight confusion - I was a little uncertain of it being posted on Youtube at first for this reason.

Can it be performed onstage? I haven't (I probably wouldn't perform any colour changing deck onstage), but both Kenton and I have performed it for large groups of people - it flies by. Works a charm. Certainly for restaurant work and walk-around (the majority of my performances) it'll play. You have outs, if needs be, but you'll probably find you won't need them.

There's a fair bit more to this than at first might appear, as covered on the DVD.
