Tour shirts - any recommended printers?

Postby pcwells » Jul 9th, '09, 14:11

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to get some T shirts printed up for my Edinburgh show.

If I can get them done cheaply enough, I'll use them as prizes for my 'psychic party games', and also add them to my stock of stuff for sale.

Are there any musicians out there that have been through the hoops of having tour shirts printed?

If so, can you recommend a company?

Ta muchly,

Pete

I've used them for one-offs, but not for bulk orders. They still cost about £12 per shirt, which means you either need to sell them at cost or hike up the price so far that people will run away screaming.

Their online sales system is fair enough - resembling Cafe Press, but it's still way too dear for anyone buying 50-100 shirts in one go.

Ah. I see your problem. How about a local screen-printing service?

I'd be all for it, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm highly allergic to ironing.

It makes me come out in tedium.

I find that a bottle of wine cures this.

Why would anyone want to iron a bottle of wine?

people like vistaprint offer shirts nowadays.

the set up charges are going to be lower than an independant printer.
obviously shipping costs will differ.

in fact.. vista offer shirts, fully printed to your design for about 4.50 each.

naturally the more you order, the better the price gets.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Yay! Merchandise is one of the very few topics where I can help on this forum I think.

Don't use iron on. It comes off in the wash and it looks terrible unless you print out something that's got straight lines (easier to cut out). Even then you get a discoloured look from the areas that show unprinted on film and the stiff film makes it feel horrible to wear.

If you are giving people shirts so that they might spread your name about by wearing them, you'd do well to give them something that will last, be comfortable and have a design that is inviting to wear.

Somewhere I use for budget band t-shirts is Afterlife Clothing. They do 10 single colour screen printed t-shirts on black/white shirts for £35 (+£5 postage). It works out about £4 a shirt, which is damn cheap for non-bulk orders. The quality isn't fantastic compared to other screen printers but it is far better than iron on. I haven't found any where else cheaper yet.

If you are looking for bulk t-shirts, you can get seriously good quality from Monster Screen Prints and you'll be paying around £4 a shirt when you order 100 or more. That price will probably give you a 2 colour design. They tend to do very complicated band t-shirts. There are examples on the site.
