HELP - Splitting Silk Worm Thread

Postby MasterCyde » Jun 4th, '09, 16:31

I'm working on an effect using IET and I've just received some Silk Worm (Black) Thread.

It's waaayy too visible and I keep reading how people have split the thread into three strands to counter this problem.

Any tips or ideas on splitting the thread please?

I've found a few methods of splitting:

1) Use your index finger nail and thumb nail and scrape them together with the thread in between.

2) Place the end of the thread on a table and rub it with a pencil eraser.

3) Use a pair of tweezers

I'll try these later and report back with the results.

I usually just use my thumb nail to get hold of a strand.

Can you do it with Silk Worm Thread? I've got regular IT I can split easily but Silk Worm seemed impossible with my bare hands.

I've managed to split the threads.

I just kept breaking off a piece from the thread until I saw it had a slight split end and finally managed to grab a piece to separate it.

Use a pair of tweezers and keep 'pecking' at the end. It'll eventually fray a little bit and you can use the tweezers to grab the little bit and strip it out. It will then be easier to do the thicker one to separate the remaining two.

spliiting iet

Postby magicmentalist » Jul 13th, '09, 13:23

hi i have had the same prob with spliiting the black IET and what i have found if you have one around is using a laytex glove cut up and placed on your index finger and the nail of your thumb and keep stretching the thread so it springs back that is gripped by your other index finger and thumb of the opposite hand sorry if this description is not explained enough but it is hard to put in words but im sure a few people out there can put a better explination on here.... the frixtion of the laytex glove on your index finger will split the thread so it can be easly stripped please note it will will take a few goes at it but it will seperate the strands

hope it helps

i found this idea by just pure accudent after trying everythin else i could think of
