Chair Tests

Postby GooGooDolls » Jul 22nd, '09, 03:53

Hi guys long time no see. I have been extremely busy working and practicing and studying magic. I have been struggling to find a list of references to chair tests in magic books on the internet. I know it was posted around the web on either Magic Bunny or Talk Magic however I have done searches on both and haven't found anything close to what I am looking for. I was wondering if anyone here knew where to find the information? Thanks if anyone can answer my question.

Chair Tests?

Do you mean Chair Predictions?

The bulk of them are not available as a single piece but in a book but, if you are looking for a solid routine with some good production value there are two I'd suggest; Rick Maue's FATE is down right awesome and Sebastian Black's Balloon Chair Prediction is designed for some straight forward fun.

You'd have to check with Rick on FATE and I believe Sebastian's routine is available for less than $10.00 at Lybrary.com

Yeah I mean chair predictions. I know the bulk of them would not be qualified in a show piece. I was wanting to see the list of chair predictions to look through them and maybe come up with something that could be entertaining enough to stand on its two feet with some creativity of coarse. By the way I have heard Ricks Fate you have recommended it to me a lot. I was curious is it psychological based. Thats the only question I have on that item because I know some of his stuff is Psychological based. I also tried to look up on the Lybrary.com about Sebastian's material but couldn't find it. Thanks if anyone else can help me find the list that I guess I can't find no more.

I think the majority of Ricks stuff is psychology based. Tho I may be wrong on this.

Luke Jermay has a chair prediction effect. I think it's on his Skull Duggery DVD or in one of his books.

You should definitely check out Gary Kurtz's 'Ultimate Chair Prediction Plus'.. A great effect ! It is sold as a manuscript. I don't know if it is still marketed, but it keeps popping up on eBay and the like.

Also keep a check on magicweek's For Sale page. If I remember correctly I've seen it listed there too.

If you can get hold of "The Roy DVD" (Roy Zaltsman and Roy Yozevich), it has a chair prediction called Places that is very interesting. And ridiculously simple.

FATE is entirely "automatic" and has a good deal of flexibility sewn into it, when it comes to multiple performance.

It's been a while since I've used it, but it has become a standard bit in my stage shows and at least twice now I've used it as the closer to the first half of my full-evening program and the audience eats it up. However, I don't recall that it has any psychological elements, it's all more or less automatic... You can reach Sebastian directly by going to his forum THE MENTAL IMAGE... this is NOT a magician's forum but a place for (mostly) very seasoned and serious mental performers. We have a few members here at TM that are members over there and I'm certain getting vouched for wouldn't be a problem. Just send a note to "The Management" when you get to the forum and tell him I suggested his Balloon Chair Prediction, he'll take care of you (though it may take a few days, his life is up-side-down at present due to a mortally ill daughter that's just taken a major turn to the worse) but he is good people and can be trusted... you might want to look into his Clearly Q&A board while chatting with him

First I look to see if the chair has arm rests if not I disregard it completely. If it passes that initial test I tend to actually sit in the chair, (of course being a magician and having sold many electric chairs I also tend to rule out that possibility before sitting in the chair), I put my arms...oh never mind.

Here's a list of chair predictions, credit goes to Ezzet & Paolo Cavalli at the café;

There is also an essay on Chair Tests in Invocation By Max Maven.

I second Rick Maue's Fate - fantastic effect, though not a traditional "chair" prediction. You can use chairs, but it's not designed that way.

Also his Group Dynamic and Body Language routines are great effects. You can't go wrong with any of the 3.

Patrick Redford also released a pretty cool chair prediction routine in his Largo lecture notes last year. Not sure if this is a limited release or not, but it has some nice thinking.

Marc Spelmann also released a chair prediction routine in his 101108 lecture notes, called IYP - but I haven't read that, so I can't speak of it.

Thanks for the list, Yaniv!
