Pope Benedict XVI is to appear on an album which could be competing with pop and reality TV stars for the coveted Christmas number one spot.

President of Geffen Colin Barlow, whose other artists include Snoop Dogg, Mary J Blige and the Pussycat Dolls, described the Pontiff's voice as "incredible".

The Pope's album will probably be pretty good. I like Gregorian chants, ancient carols, and so forth (despite not being a Christian).

But I hesitate to trust the taste of a promoter whose clients include Snoop Dogg and the Pussycat Dolls.
