Two Videos

Postby Harry Guinness » Aug 12th, '09, 17:15

These are two of my latest videos.

The first one is a clip from Alakazam's new DVD, The Manchurian Approach and is used with permission. I can't urge you enough to get the DVD!

The second is a very rough concept run of the workings of an effect. There is one brief incident of swearing... This is not presented to anything like my normal standard, it's a very rough run through to prove it works.

Very nice. There wasn't some kind of hypnotic suggestion in the first video was there? I really have an overwhelming urge to buy the Manchurian Approach now. :?

That's an awesome OOTW in the other vid too.

It was a 'Stiff Arm' or a ahem Stiffy. It's in Reality is Plastic, it's a set piece similar to magnetic hands and fingers.

I meant the video made me want to by the Manchurian Approach so I was joking that there was a subliminal... ah, forget it.

Very nicely done.

To bad we couldn't see the setup on the stiffy.

I'd be down with getting that OoTW from you if you ever put into a format for sale.

That OOTW is rather good - I've got a vague idea, but I think it'd be a bit easier to figure out if we could see you rather than him.

Why are you trying to figure it out?! Just enjoy the magic.

My only problem with the OOTW was, because of the way it was shot, my very first impression was that you were somehow signalling off camera to him and I think anyone watching it, even if they had no idea how even the simplest of tricks could be done, would probably think the same thing.

As you said, it was a rough run, and I do think the first person magic trick idea is a neat way of doing a video, but I think when you shoot it again, for this specific trick you'll need someone else to hold the camera or else you'll get hundreds of YouTube comments along the lines of:

'dat magic guy woz just tellin him wot color each card woz' (obviously with worse spelling and libellous refences to someones mother/sexuality)

The actual effect was blinding though and I look forward to seeing your finished version.

Yeah. A mate was meant to be there to film it but missed his bus. In Ireland that means an hour delay so he went home!!!

It will be shot again in third person and that will not effect the trick in the slightest.

Glad you all like it!

That was my thought, to be honest - not as blatant as "he's signalling off-camera", but perhaps a "pre-show" hypnotic suggestion to make him unconsciously aware of a subtle off-camera gesture that reveals the colour of the card. I could be - nay, probably am - wrong, but I wouldn't put hypnosis beyond somebody who's featured in the Manchurian Approach.

Like everyone else, I'm thoroughly impressed and I can't wait to see a polished, scripted version at full pace. For a rough demo that was awesome.
