From the time I first started doing that bit and even today if I were ever to do it again, the music used was "Dance 10 Look 3" from "A Chorus Line"... the story of a flat chested, no tukkis actress gone to the plastic surgeon... once the vivisection was completed, she emerged quite well endowed.

But one of my favorite acts was, I believe, a UK team in which the partner goes into the cabinet, all the normal schtick BUT, the lead partner ends up removing the middle completely and walking off stage with it... a brief pause and the upper box drops, crashing into the lower section. A toilet is heard to flush as the cabinet now turns, revealing the drawing of an Outhouse on the back side... partner #2 exiting, tucking his shirt in but obviously a good foot (or more) shorter in height. It was totally unexpected and left me rolling on the floor.

But I also wrote one other routine that I absolutely loved.

A chum of mine ended up with a Zig Zag that makes the first one in this thread look like a streamlined dream car. It was ugly as all get out and simply didn't use all the standard assets...

I stole the unit from him for a week and did some cosmetic work on it and wrote the script and so it begins...

Steve would remind you of comic Don Knotts, a very nervous and not all that much together personality and that's exactly what I exploited in this script. The MC introducing him would say, "... and Steve has promised to present the world famous Cutting a Woman into Thirds illusion..."

Steve would come quietly out from the wings, whisper to the MC and some light bickering would ensue; obviously revealing the fact that Steve didn't own any such prop but it was in the contract that he'd do it...

Steve runs to make a phone call and finally returns to begin his show.

Throughout the act you have construction workers moving in through the audience with lumber, paint, etc. As Steve moved into various routines the patter was deliberately set with double-entandre but as the assumed word or terms would be said some very loud hammering or sawing would interrupt from back stage...
... Finally, it came time to do the bit... but Steve didn't have a cute young lady to help out. The MC runs off stage and comes back with an inflatable Sex Toy that was placed into the cabinet... hands, feet & face in the appropriate spots. The routine flows just as if a real girl were in the prop (the doll obviously deflating as the first blade was inserted). Once restored, the doors would open and out popped a real girl.

It brought the house down... but then, the audience had been rolling long before the trick was ever seen.

Jon Van der Put has a nice routine tucked away in the performance only bonus section of his Out of the Routine dvd. Nothing crazily different but it's a nice smooth choregraphed piece where the girl in the box is singing into a wireless mic before during and after the effect. Quite a good convincer.

The artist who does not rise, descends.

You haven't a clue how many old timers you just made throw up.

Not only WAS that over done in the 70s, that and dancing with the box became something quite repulsive... especially after a certain kid from New Jersey started doing it on TV...

I'm planning to use it in a routine with a handcuff escape and visible sawing in half in as-well.

If you're looking for a comedy escape that involves a degree of vivisection, give me a yell. There's something Kenny and I came up with years ago that never was produced that you may want to consider.

Im trying to remember the name of the family ( they came from the states) that does a whole act singing. they included a zig zag, and i have to say it was one of the best things ive seen.
Beautifly choreographed.

I also recall the copperfield singing zig zag. the song was " in the most unusual way" and yes... he ended up dancing with the box.

on Youtube, there is old footage of my dear friend Vanni Pule, performing it, with the lovely lady singing..

The Osmonds?

Donny & his sister were doing a Zig Zag for a while. Their Branson show still has a bit of magic in it every now and then, as does the new Vegas show Don & Marie are doing.

Sigh... the memories :?
