Backpalming a silver dollar?

Postby JimmyS1985 » Aug 27th, '09, 03:02

Im learning backpalming a Morgan 1885 silver dollar right now (Not sure if you brits can easily find American coins, but its a very pretty coin and worth the $19 I paid), MAN Is my hand sore! Its definitly a position that my fingers are not use to, and I think Im started to develop a sore spot on the back of my fingers.

My mom saw me doing it and thought it was a very impressive effect, it appears that I am pulling it out of thin air, do any of you guys do this and is it worth the reaction you get from spectators? Id like to do it again and again, but right now Im only good for one time, I still cant get it down getting the silverdollar back into place. This is the first time Ive ever tried it, Im gonna keep practicing it for a few more days before I show it off.

Im more of a card magician than a coin magician, but Im willing to learn new effects.

if you are going to develop this, you should be using palming coins rather than ordinary dollars. they have milled edges, and are thinner, so you can get a better grip.

I use £2 coins because they're the biggest coin you can get in the UK

Yea, but using a real silver dollar I think adds to the effect even if its a bit more painful on my hand, plus people like seeing that its real when Im done.

If you want to do the effect and simply find it too painful, is it out of the question to use another palm? The backpalm isn't for everybody, and there are easier palms out there (I'm a sucker for the thumb palm, and the back thumb palm can be used if you want to show the front of your hand)

why are you backpalming a coin in the first place?
I dont think that there are many routines that use this sleight.
most would use a goshman pinch

I think you need to let up a bit, practice something else. Your hands shouldn't feel that sore.

I don't personally back palm because I just don't find it particularly deceptive, my hand always ends up looking very odd. It might work on the stage, but if you do close up... well, I think they are going to notice it. You need precisely the right size of coin, too, a UK £2 coin is too small for me to back palm, while a silver dollar is too large.

I used to back palm the way you are doing it. I find the Goshman pinch a little more user friendly and the angles are the same.

A little sugestion. I don't use the move to vanish the coin so to speak. I vanish the coin using the retention vanish. (With running the risk of giving to much away) coin is placed into the left hand (retention vanish) and I give the left fist a little squeeze, meanwhile the Goshman pinch goes into play in the right hand. Now the left hand is in a loose fist, knuckles pointing towards the floor, The right hand which has been relaxed at my side now comes up, hand open palm up and the fingertips just brush the knuckles of the left hand and then pulls away just a little bit as the left hand opens showing the coin gone. both hands can now be seen empty. And that lasts a fraction of a second, it is just a subtlety. Left hand is still the focus of attention, right hand casually goes back to my side and the coin is delivered from the pinch/backpalm to the classic palm. And then I go on with my routine.

I use regular half dollars I can easily use the Morgan dollar I just find that people are more interested in the dollar then they are in the effect. Half dollars however are still surprisingly popular and are not questioned.
