Have any of you guys created some really amazing original tricks? I have made a few but my main question is this, how do you create a name for a trick? How do you make it appealing to others?

I don't know about "amazing" much less "really amazing," but i have made up a few.

As far as names go... I have to be honest most of the names for tricks really bug me. They all too clever for there own good. :) I thought about not naming my tricks, but that’s a lousy solution too.

I like the name of the trick "two card monte." It's simple and descriptive to a degree, and there isn't a lot of clever puns and what not. Don't get me wrong, I like a pun, just not in the title of a trick.

But as you can see, my names aren't that great:

Some of the names I have are: "4 Strikes", "Ace to your card", "Oops"... hmmm. I forget the others.

I try and just pick a name that signifies something about the trick. Something specific. To be honest though, I really don't like any of the names I came up with.

I tried my hand at creating new tricks but gave up. :(
I'd spend hours, days sometimes, thinking of a new card trick, practice it til it was spot-on, then show it to the guy at a magic shop I visit up north.
"Oh. That's such-and-such, isn't it?" he'd say and show me the same (or very similar) trick hanging up on the wall.

If I'd started in magic a few years earlier, I could be rich by now.
There again, if it wasn't for the fact i don't like the sight of blood, I could also be a brain surgeon. :)

Ive created 4 effects, which are only small effects, but pretty handy in my opinion, cheap and simple to do. These will be going on sale on ebay soon, with the most expensive being about £6/7, through an ebay dealer

We seem to be wondering off topic - again!

sorry, at school, not really concentrating!

When i think of a title, i look at what the trick does, what is involved, then think of a pun to go with it.

One that i have come up with is called "Xchange" because it involves a large "X" melting up through a pack.

Stuntman got its name because the routine talks about every card having a stunt double.

Green with envy got its name because at the end, every single card turns green after a 5 phase routine.

Just a few examples

Nice thinking! If you flick through the zillions of effects available from the on-line shops, there's a good indication of the sorts of names currently in vogue. Anything from puns to exotic and elaborate names/phrases are used. I'd guess it needs to be a fairly relevant name and certainly one which avoids using a name already in existence. Years ago I bought a packet trick called, if memory serves correctly, Sweet Dreams (or was it 'Dreems'?). It involved the use of just 4 gaffed cards and a rather contrived line of patter. For the life of me I couldn't figure out where the name came from as there was nothing sweet or dreamy about the trick and no reference in the patter - in fact it was one which I quickly gave away as it was just plain naff. Perhaps that would be an inversely good name for a new effect - NAFF! (with a tip of the hat to NFW! Perhaps?).
