I'm going to uni in St. Andrews.
Are there any magic clubs in Edinburgh or Dundee or whatever is the closest magic club to St. Andrews?
Can anyone give me some information on the magic club, closest?
How to apply?
Is an audition required?
Anything else required?
How much it costs?
How often do you meet?
How many people are in the club?

I also wanted to ask, becasue i've never been in a magic club and am still thinking about it. What are the advantages Vs disadvantages of magic clubs? - I could have put this on a separate post, so i hope it doesn't get too messy asking two questions in one post.

Hope you can help,
Many Thanks,
Ed.

Hi Jing

There have been several discussions on Magic Clubs pro's and cons before, so it's well worth do a search.

The cost varies from club to club so I can't really comment on that.

Magic Clubs
Initiation Ceremonies

and for a list of all magic societies in your area see...

From a personal point of view I have gained a great deal from joining a magic society. New friends, new skills and more opportunities to perform...

There have also already been several discussions on the "Audition" I think.

Your nearest options are Dundee, Perth and Kirkaldy.

Edinburgh is a bit further, but I'm a member, so PM me if you want more details about Edinburgh.

Dundee meets every 2 weeks, its quite a small club with only maybe 10 or 15 folks at the meetings and is quite informal, maybe half those attending are "hobbyists" like meself . interested people are allowed to visit 3 times before officially joining. I didnt have to do an audition as such to get in but i had performed various effects to club members at meetings and proved i had a keen interest in magic and not just "wanting to know how its done" but i know that some have had to audition. Costs are very reasonable, £10 a year membership and a donation of £1 per meeting for the tea boat!

Advantages (in my opinion)
Gives you a captive audience to bounce ideas off,
Allows you to pick up tips and hints from like minded people
a club library which has a selection of video/dvd/books
allows you to attend lectures from visiting magi
stops me from boring Mrs mog rigid by constantly asking "pick a card!" etc

cant actually think of much in the way of disadvantages actually.

if theres anything else you need to know drop me a pm

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

I'm kind of interested in coming along to see what the club is like Mr Mog.
Can you PM me a contact name and number so's I can find out where you guys meet and on what days, etc.

I keep on reading in books that a lot of the pro's shun joining a magic club but what have I got to lose?
As you say yourself, it opens up a new audience to try out your tricks on someone other than "her indoors". And other magicians are more likely to pick up on your angles and can provide some constructive criticism.

My only reservation is the "train-spotter" type fanatics, but that's a necessary evil I guess.
