So there, now readers of this post know who I am :)

You're right about the anonimity. One will find out one way or another who to take serious and who not, right?

Haha, yeah, I came up with that name about 6 or 7 years ago when first browsing fora, so I kept on using it so it would be easier for me to remember my login name :) Shrimpton's quite the name too ;)

in other news and views - please dont include me in your leaned ones list replicant, I'm far from that...

after meeting a fair few from TM now, it is fun to see if there are any differences between forums, and reality - I'm pleased to say all have been lovely people so far...

apart from...well, you know...

For those that do not know, i come from an agressive background, thought i had left all that behind and i always thought that magicians would be a friendly bunch, but as is quite evident from the blackpool posts that is not literally the case and is seen far too many times on Forums. I must admit apart from the odd *rse TM isnt as bad as the rest.

Also another thing that annoys' me about Forums, is the what i call "Full-time Pro syndrome" If you are not a a"Known Name" (Known to who?) you are a nobody.

Also "Armchair experts" who wouldnt know a gig, if i asked them to do one of mine.

That is the dark side of Forums' methinks.

Iain, please amend your last post. You've met me in the flesh.

It's very easy to get wrapped up in forums and occassionally it's refreshing to step back and either stop posting or even stop visiting for a while. Nothing's worse than getting really annoyed by someone online then realising that you'll never meet them and the only way they can have any impact on your life is by being a pain in cyberspace. If you turn the computer off and look out the window they go away and stop being relevant just like that.

Took me a while to realise this .... (not the Iain bit lol)...

And Lyndon, agree tooooooo ...

I think Iains original post was slightly sexist in that he mentions us laydees having some wierd pm's etc... I know of several males that have had some stalker like experiences too (nooooo not from me, i dont count).

I find them more and more frustrating of late, particularly people whom i have met or know of ending up being not what was seemed.

Ive had my fingers burnt on forums and learned some harsh lessons, but without my intial wombling to here i wouldnt have the opportunities i do now.

Im not here or anywhere much now, partly as i dont feel the need, partly because it stresses me out at times, partly cause im too darn busy and partly because i utilise other communication tools.

i think forums go to people's head...they think they're lord of the manner, and can say what they want, however they want - and when they're called up on it - they dont like it...

and opinions spoken like gospel, when really opinions are like bottoms, we all have them, and some of them stink...but each are created equal...

there's also a bit of bullying that goes on, nothing too bad - but it does go to show how inflated some egos are, and also how fantasists can create whatever they like online, and ultimately neither they nor anyone else can ever prove things one way or the other...

still...some of the reviews are quite informative... :D

Forums are interesting places, I'm a member of a few different ones of various different subjects and it's quite fascinating to watch how different people act. I must say that magicians do seem to have the biggest egos ;-)

A lot depends on how you take them, I read a lot of posts from different people, it doesn't take long to work out who's worth listening to and who's just a bag of hot air. Forums are just like anything else on the net and to be honest real life too, there're people who like to think that they know what they're talking about but odn't really have a clue, those who just like to stir people up and the odd few that offer help and decent advise.

Forums are just that "collections of people having a chat".

I take almost everything posted with a pinch of salt or three as I have no idea who any of you are and meeting you once for five minutes wouldn't change that either.

All communities are cliquey, on-line communities are no different.

I actually think this is one of the friendlier forums I have used. I remember being a member on a forum where veteran members would deliberately "harsh" new members, those that survived stayed but the vast majority left. All seemed rather petty back then and still does now.

My biggest problem with TM is there are far too many old threads I spend far too much of my time reading!

I reckon forums probably can get in the way of performing. Having said that though, I've been thinking the same about books and the like as well...

There seem to be a few views on what makes good magic, all of which I'm sure are valid. The problem is, I would say that someone's style will be right for them, and not others.
The latest view on what makes magic good (or 'real') seems to be that it should be close to what Derren Brown does as possible. How many people on TM talk about how it's much better to claim to use NLP/whatever than psychic powers/whatever...
He's an extremely talented magician, but I don't think that makes his views gospel. Sponge balls and cards seem to be viewed as quite passé now because they're unbelievable (my opinion, maybe not true)...

A few years back, the view was that 'real' magic should be 'in your face' and visual, i.e. in the style of David Blaine. Sawing a woman in half or other stage illusions were passé and too unbelievable.

So I think one of the problems is that people won't try so much to go out there and find a performing style that works for them. The internet says that magic should be like this, so we have to grow a beard and do mentalism (no offense to bearded mentalists, I know a lot of you guys were around before DB ;) )
If I try to present something in his style, I'd just come across ridiculous. The same if I tried to do it like Blaine. Or Jay Sankey, or whoever else. I've tried, and just look silly. I'm starting to get better at just being me and doing magic tricks because I like to, and it's entertaining.

Just some rambling from me...pleasant break from all the serious stuff I should be doing...

Ironicaly , Ive become "a known name " in the community, because of my writings on forums.

And Im not a full time pro. Just a full time thinker.

O.K, There's lord knows how many shows over the years, thats made me the thinker i am ...

my BIG MEGGA ANOYANCE ABOVE ALL ELSE.. ( see i wrote it in caps because this realy does get my goat!) is the leach.

There are times, ( and it's not just this forum ) that i feel like i am being sucked dry of thoughts, ideas and sugestons, because the people that take these notions never say thank you, and worse, NEVER CONTRIBUTE THEMSELVES.

BOY THAT WINDS ME UP!
