It's come as a great surprise to me that a re-print of one of the most important works on card magic has not made big news.
Stephen Minch has created a very nice work.
a. Roterberg New Era Card tricks... Published by MAGICO...
280 PAGES, HARD BACKED. ( 2004)
( ORIGINAL PUBLICATION, 1897 )
A Rotterberg's New era card magic, is one of those facinating works, the name of which pops up all the time in Bibliographies.
It shows basic sleights, which are it has to be said, a little under described.
but the true worth of the book comes when you move on to the sections describing faked, and mechanical cards.
There are gems here which , with a little thought , could be used today..
Card in bottle, penetrating cards, changing cards, rising cards, torn and restored cards..All meat to the hit and run man. and using in some cases, highly practical methods.
The torn corner card for example, uses Black art to create the ilusion that a signed freely chosen card instantly repairs it's self.
The gimmick would cost pennys to make.
Gary, if you read this, and are still thinking about that Zodiac card effect, well it is in here, in all its complicated numerological glory.
If you are a mentalist, you will find Gems in here. Did you know , for example, that Psudo Psychometry appears in here, 38 years before Anneman invented it!
just a few moments spent on the new introduction will show that expert at the card table, " borrowed" a number of pieces from this book verbatum, and un credited.
I could go on , and on about this book, but wont.
Buy it yourself, and discover it your way.
the price is around £25.00.
Original prints sell for around £300.00!!!
