Do I get the 3G for £25/month (8GB, free phone) or the 3GS for £35/month (16GB, £87 phone)? Is the 3GS worth the extra £10/month for two years? Thanks.

The double HDD is probably worth it if you have any reasonable sized music collection. I have a 3GS but I have no real experience with the 3G to compare to.

The 3GS has a better camera (it can take video as well as photos and has autofocus), contains a digital compass (handy for google maps), has a special coating so that greasy fingers don't leave a mark on the screen (and they will, no matter how clean your hands!), contains voice control, and is quicker.

I have a 3GS, but I guess it depends on how much you want the extra features and if you can justify the extra cost (bearing in mind there are many phones on the market that cost £120)

It's worth holding off for a few months if you can help it, as Orange and Vodafone will be offering both by the end of the year

It's probably worth popping into a local Apple store/reseller or o2/carphone warehouse store, play with them both and see if the extra features wow you or not

Worth considering as well is that after 9 months you can drop your contract rate down by one band after 9 months with o2

So you could gor 9 months have double minutes etc and save £10 overalll

I think for example you'd get the 3GS phone for free if you went for the £45 a month contract saving you the upfront cost of paying for the phone and then drop your rate to £35 after 9 months.

I personally just went for an 18 month contract as most electronic device batteries are pants after a short time and to be honest I'm not impressed at all with the battery life of my two week old 3GS

I'm not even a moderate user and I have to charge it everyday

Try turning off bluetooth (settings->general) and push services (Settings->Mail, contacts...->Fetch New Data), those two settings seem to eat up battery power the most

Thanks, gents. I'm going to wait until early next year because Vodafone will be doing the iPhone then (Orange will have it by Christmas). Hopefully the tariff prices will come down a bit. I don't particularly relish the thought of paying £35 every month, let alone £45. Hmm, decisions....

Was wondering if a new thread might be posted about the iPhone given the recent news. I for one am super-excited I'm on Orange and my phone's on the way out, and even though I don't like pandering to fads, I had a play on the 3GS the other day and it's awesome (though bear in mind I've never had a go on any iPhone before). So will definitely be nabbing one as soon as they come out, and hopefully the run-up-to-Christmas release will make the prices a bit more attractive than what O2 currently offer.

One of my colleagues is furious though; she really wanted an iPhone but didn't want the cost of cancelling contracts, switching networks etc (she's on Orange). She settled with a Blackberry on an 18 month contract just the week before they announced it. Wah wah wah waaaaaaah...

i dont get the iphone craze really...and relying too much on one object for ALL your needs is dangerous as far as I'm concerned...if you break it, bang goes your music, your phone, your video...everything...

i just have an iphone lite - that cookie touch screen...fifteen quid on pay as you go - unlimited internet and texts...plus your fifteen quid as credit too...

i dont really want to watch the iplayer on a tiny screen...not for 45 quid a month...

and yes, i have used several friends iphones to test it out...meh...

I totally understand your point here, until about a year or so ago I preferred to have a separate phone and ipod for that very same reason. But I just got fed up with having to carry around one extra thing. I prefer the convenience of it all and the extra pocket space I now have. And my iphone is backed up onto my computer, so if I'm silly enough to break it all my data is still safe

Although you're right about watching video on it, it really is far too small for that!

I've decided to go for the 3G for £24.99/month for two years with O2 (with a free iPhone). Unless, of course, Vodafone (my current provider) are willing to beat that.
