DB gone down

Postby mindpaul » Oct 3rd, '09, 17:14

Mr Brown has gone down in my estimations after his last show on tv.
It has nothing to do with any of his effects it has however to do with his choice of words.
When we heard him, seamingly in a secret location somewhere in europe, he referred to everyone watching back home in England. I was watching and I live in Scotland and Im sure there were people watching in Wales and Nothern Ireland.
Know your audience and all that.

I see that as him just referring to the country where he lives in as England. I don't see much wrong with that

Apropos of very little, you just reminded me of this piece of sheer comedy genius: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odsnKKz2-dU

Muscled by a born and bred?

Derren was born in Croydon, went to Uni in Bristol and lives in London now. I think he is therefore eligable to call his 'home' England even if the scots don't like it.

DB was after all trying to give us the impression that he was anywhere BUT England...

Totally missed my point there MRKEV, If he was scottish and he said for all the viewers in scotland and it was broadcast in England you wouldn't have picked up on it then. It happens all too often on national tv.
However I was really having a laugh. seems to me someone is getting all defensive.

When I was a student in Edinburgh, I used to love going to see muscle-headed American heavy metal bands play live - just for that one precious moment when they greeted their audience with the words 'Hello England!'

You'd be amazed at how many of them did it - and how confused they became when the inevitable torrent of abuse erupted from the audience. :)

Could it have been a cunningly disguised clue to the location of the casino "somewhere in Europe"?

When he changed up his chips in the casino they spoke in English.

Not just when they spoke to Derren but also to the pit boss (something along the lines of "changing £5,000"), also now I think about it I think they were gambling in pounds so perhaps he was somewhere in the British Isles... just not England.

Isn't it just a bit childish to make a big deal out of this? :|

I mean outside of the UK it's kind of common to refer to the UK as Britain, England, Britland, et cetera. ;) And when I go on holidays to Scotland, I say I'm going on holidays to Scotland.

Sure if a government official would make that "mistake" it should be scrutinized, but to qualify a performer for saying "England" while he perhaps meant 'the United Kingdom' would seem a little petty to me.

But perhaps as a foreigner I'm too unfamiliar with the sensitivities.

I'd rather have you refer to it as the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but yes I'm from there. 8)

Well, it was an hour of prime time TV that promised to be entertaining and yet ended in a most disappointing way.
