Torn & Restored Card Trick

Postby Chandler » Oct 9th, '09, 22:22

Ok ... got an interesting one ...

My old Maths Teacher was always a sceptic when it came to magic tricks and was the type to try and catch out the magician, but he always told us about the time when he himself got caught out ...

The effect was a torn and restored card, he chose a card and then tore it into pieces himself and then handed back the torn pieces to the magician. Because he was trying to be clever he decided to retain one of the pieces before giving them back. The magician then restored the card but it was minus a corner, which just happened to fit the piece he had retained thinking the magician didn't know ... he was floored!!

I am fairly sure that this has been subject to exageration in the re-telling, I just wondered if anyone knew if this is a possible effect ... I can do a torn & restored card, but just wondered if it's possible to force a corner and make the punter think they kept it back themselves ....

what do you all think?

i can think of a way...it can't be signed though...

there's an interesting theory 11 dvd, Believe - which is to do with a torn corner (that IS signed)...and its one of the nicest little pieces of magic i've ever seen...

i must brush up on it in fact...its nice and weird to watch...

Yeah there is a few good Torn and restored cards out there.

I think a few are dandy, but they seem like something you should only do for magicians or whatever. Because it seems to lap people, that they'd just look at it like a puzzle.

I use Daniel Garcia's "Torn" a lot. The reason being that every other T&R looks like you're folding up and then unfolding a card.

Garcia's version is convincing. You show four separate pieces, and they go back together one at a time. It's a thing of beauty.

There is one identical to your description - by Paul Harris, I believe.

The story your teacher told was a bit of a distortion. The trick REQUIRES one piece to be held back, which then matches perfectly.

The four good torn n restored card handlings i know, in order, are:
-Paul Harris - Connected
-Guy Hollingworth - Reformation i believe it is called
-Matthew Bich (unsure of the name)
- Daniel Garcia, torn two

I expected a bit of distortion ... however, he was adamant about retaining the piece himself ... I just wonder whether the magician saw him retaining the piece and just got lucky, ??

Have a look in Mark Wilson's Complete Course, the torn and restored in there is pretty much exactly as you described it.

You can do it signed.Stephen tucker released a version quite a few years ago, that was rather nice.

And then there's the version i do. :)

It doesnt have to be playing cards.Indeed i get a better reaction when it's done impromptu with any old train ticket 8)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....
