I recieved a pile full of new effects today & two of them use the same principal. I'm new to magic at around 3 years & one of the first effects I ever bought was using this principal & to be honest I'm not really comfortable with it, maybe its fine & just me?

One of the effects in question was Draculea so if you have this you'll knoww what I'm talking about.

Basically spec shuffles & cuts the card & then places them down, you then place a wallet, bit of paper or whatever onto the top of the deck...

And this to me is the problem, why would I put this bit of paper onto the deck, why not just down on the table.

So if you know what I mean I'd appreciate any thoughts on this like do you get burned?

If you mean the Black Hart Draculea then it is easy and practical to perform. I have never had any problems with it when performed live.

me neither, plus it should be done nonchalantly anyway...nah not had anyone say a word...

actually, with regards to your post title though - if you're saying that during the performance, well..dont! you'll draw attention to yourself...

the old adage is true..."dont run when youre not being chased..."

i suppose you could just put the envelope down tentively and say "well, i dont even want to touch any of this..." and go from there...

Well thats good to hear, only got the effect this morning so haven't had a chance to perform it yet. Suppose its one of those moves that seems so obvious to you when you know it your sure everyone else is gonna suss it.

Nobody will question you placing the letter on top of the cards. You will have to help them read the letter though! Never had one spec who could read it all the way through yet!!! I usually end up reading it in a big, booming, dramatic voice!

yeah, you can always make yourself a crib-sheet printed out on your p.c. in plain text...i have mine occasionally blu-tac'd to the inside lid of my little chinese chest i use for these effects...

at night, by candle-flame, in a dry whisper, which in turn makes the people round the table lean forward listening intently...

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who worries like that.
I have found however that if I dress the part (I have a gothic costume I use with a wig and yellow glass specs), that I feel much more comfortable presenting magick especially this type.

I would love any places, where I can get more story telling magic, it helps me perform much better.

I don't know the effect but from the description I think I can guess what the method is. As the boys have said, don't make a fuss about what you're doing, just do it almost off hand and they wont question a thing.

I used to feel the same way until I heard a comment from a spectator. I was doing an effect at a wedding using this method and the spectator turned to her companion and said "But I don't understand- I could have cut that deck anywhere". Never looked back
