Spoonaround - Axel Hecklau

Postby Waldorfcartoons » Nov 14th, '09, 12:16

You can see this trick and Axel's other material at his website http://www.axelhecklau.com and, if you haven't done so, I recommend you take a look.

I now have two of his routines - 'Spoonaround' and 'Newsflash' (I'll review that later).

Spoonaround is a comedy magic routine and very much fits my style (I'm a speaker and MC). Take a look at the routine and you will know if it's right for you.

What you get
The necessary spoon to do the trick and a dvd showing Axel performing it in a studio, performing it to a live audience and explaining it in full.

The dvd is quite short (12 minutes) but that's OK.

As with all of Axel's material, it is very thorough and high quality. The spoon is of high quality too. Axel has a humorous style and he describes his products as 'high quality and made in Germany' - which is true on both counts.

Ease of use
It is an easy trick to perform so, in that sense, it is at level '1' but, as you'll see from Axel's demonstrations, the power is in the presentation and performance. It would be a great shame not to give the routine the impact it deserves. An hour in front of the mirror is a great investment.
I rate it level '1' for ease of use and level '2' for presentation, just to stress the point. There's nothing difficult, but it's worth doing well.

Value for Money
This is quite a difficult category as it is expensive (especially in the UK right now as we slowly slip under the water.... 42 € plus postage to UK works out at about £44).

For me, it is quite good value for money because it suits my style and I've had barrels of laughs already. As with everything, I recommend you think about how you could use it before you buy. (Advice I need to take myself! My new rule is not to buy anything until I raise the funds by selling stuff I don't use, or bought in a cups fueled flush of excitement. In line with my new 'rules', I'll be adding lots of items to the 'sale section')

Overall value 7.5/10
I would rate higher but the UK price hurts a little (that's not Axel's fault, of course; it would take a lot more space for me to tell whose fault I think it is .... )

I have seen this used as a part of spoon bending mentalist act. The performer showed the spoon to a member of the audience, put it in her hand and asked her if she could feel the spoon change. After some gags and laughter he asked her to take a good look at the spoon, to see if it had changed anything while in her hand and she got a shock when she saw it had changed into a fork, while in her hand. Brilliant act!

Hmmm... what to say...

Mine arrived today.

So the service from Axel is excellent.

As for the trick...

I think it must be said that just because I will definitely be using this one a lot doesn't mean that any of you should use it at all.

In fact, I'd much prefer it if you didn't.

Thanks Mark; I've now found 'precious metal' at Zane's magic shop for £12.99. Had to buy it just to compare! £12.99 is a lot less that £44!!

What I dont understand is how he can put a £31 mark up on a prop and release what is a pretty standard routine for the prop. I used to work with the original Precious Metal and it stood the test of time - in fact I might just dig it out again.

This industry makes me sick sometimes.
