Race the Sat Nav

Postby Ant » Dec 3rd, '09, 19:27

Does anyone else feel the urge to play this or is it just me?

Basically if your arrival time is 16.55 you try and "prove" the sat nav wrong by slowly trying to knock minutes off bit by bit.

Stupid I know but the irresistible challenge of man versus machine!

I'm surprised that they haven't done anything like this on top gear yet. They've tested satnav-on-other-devices on the gadget show, but seeing top gear testing the accuracy of satnavs would be interesting. The best they've done is Clarkson getting lost somewhere because of a poor unit

Or did they, and I missed it?

I think they did something with it. Clarkson really doesn't like sat navs, whenever I have seen one with a sat nav in, generally he is screaming at it.

Then again... he does scream at a good many things!

On topic though, my dad has this clunky old sat nav I borrow from time to time and it seems to be set to old-biddy mode. It gave me an estimated journey time, from Sheffield to Lincoln, of four and a half hours. Serously?! Nobody drives that slow, not even the flat-cap brigade on a Sunday afternoon.

Funnily enough he said on jonathan ross' show that he loves car gadgets

I used to have the urge, but when the points on my drivers licence passed out the points I got in my leaving certificate exam (Irish readers will understand) I had to ease back a bit.

Another man-vs-machine race. Well, bird-vs-machine.

This may well have been when he was driving through Japan and playing with buttons, then in central Tokyo accidently turned the japanese sat nav off and could not work out how to tell it where he needed to go.

They were not racing the sat nav though, he was racing Hammond and May on the Japanese bullet train.
