Music Box

Postby Ian The Magic-Ian » Dec 12th, '09, 23:57

Hello,

I've been on the search for a music box. The only ones that I have found are either pink, or covered in butterflies or cats. So I tried searching for plain wooden rectangular ones; all of which are $200+... So finally I've decided to make one. (It's for a stage routine).

However, before I decide to do so, is it possible to buy the metal music combs that make the noise, or will I have to buy a music box and use the one in there?

Anyone happen to know?

:)

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

 Sounds like you're building a "Musing Box"

Do a Google search for Music Boxes+Building and you should find a fair list of suppliers for kits, combs, spindles, etc. I used to have links but haven't done that sort of thing in ages (thanks for reminding me though, I need to pick up a new unit with Xmas music)

If in fact the Musing Box is your intent let me tell you that it's one of the most emotionally potent routines I've ever presented; never fails to get tears to flowing when you use the right patter (such as the Lee Earle script concept). However, I have an alternative handling should you be interested, that does not require a table

I buy a few 'crafty' bits and pieces from the shop below. The link should give you a list of the devices you seek.

I've just realised you're in the US. The easiest way to get US-only outlets is to type "music box mechanisms" into Google, hit enter, then click on Shopping. Sort by "Price: low to high" and scroll down to the mechanisms themselves. The Swiss 18 note ones are probably what you're looking for.

Making the box itself is fairly easy. You just write out the pieces of wood you need and take it along to the local hardware shop to have them cut the pieces you need. The hard part is deciding on the wood, because this dictates the finish, but the local hardware shop will also help you there. Dressing the finished box a matter of ordering the hinges, feet, and other parts online from a craft shop if the hardware shop doesn't stock what you need.

If you need any help lining the box, drop me a PM. I had to work this out recently for a private commission and wasted a lot of expensive baize doing so.

Plenty of places do the clockwork ones. Wind it before a performance and you're good to go.

So glad that I waited to purchase one as I went to the thrift store and found one (in a music box) for $3. :)
