Call me old fashioned but I don't think you can beat a good old book for learning magic. I would highly recommend Royal Road to Card magic, and... Modern coin magic, they're absolute gold and should keep you going until next xmas.

I wish books did it for me - it would have saved me a fortune!

Unfortunately I take on my learnings visually.

Have you seen 'Perfection' by Oz Pearlman? 'Crossroads' by Ben Harris?

In my opinion both great effects.

Nothing unfortunate about that I think, many people prefer to learn from a video (though I am a book man myself!)

What sort of level are you at? There are many great DVD's for coins and cards. Royal Road To Card Magic is available on DVD and that is a great resource for card work.

For me personally the thing that I have bought recently that isn't a book (including ebooks) or a prop would be Proffessional Opportunist. I got some really great stuff from that.

I prefer books aswell as visual dvds... Learning is all done to the person I think I mean I can read something ten times and not understand it but watch it once and get it but then if I see something I cant get it I usually read it and I do...

Maybe I am just awkward!

If we are moving up to this league I'd love Dean Dill's 'Revelation'...

Introduction please

Sorry, its the first time i posted on the forum as i am new to magic, ive been practasing now for 2 months and seem to be picking things up nicly as i am lucky to have some very talented friends who do magic. Ive started a bit late it seems (23) compared to a lot of people ive meet who seem to have been doing magic since birth!! :D but it seems i have been well and truly bitten by the magic bug and cant get enougth of it.

Ive got a few tricks Identity and Extreme Burn by Richard Sanders which i love even though i had never done a slight before i think identity was a great starter even though it took me a month and a half to be able to complete the whole routine - its still a bit rougth to be hounest, extreme burn is my favourite and i have had some amazing reactions from it. i have also learnt some tricks with a normal deck of cards as i feel learning slieghts is the way forward, but im not opposed to gimmicks of gaffed decks (my first deck being the knockout deck)

i really like the look of Ben Harris Crossroads and requested that a few weeks back from the wife.

Im just looking for a trick that has a killer routine a trick that realy astonishes people, i dont mind putting in the hard work to get the trick perfect i just love the wow factor of magic and the skill of the performer - its a great adrenaline rush.

thanks for the suggestions guys there really helpful, im deffinatly going to have a look at Oz Pearlman he looks like a very talented chappie.

With regards to books,

i think books are a great source but i seem to learn things better from videos as i can fully see the mechanics in action and it helps me to perfect the subtletites of the sleights.

but once again thanks all and kee the list coming i really love seeing new and brillaiunt tricks

all the best

Been said before, and by the power of all that is (un)holy will be said again, Royal Road to Card magic, from there is Expert Card Technique, inside that treasure trove is the fabled Ambitious Card Routine, learn it, love it. I have never had a situation where someone hands me a pack of cards and you cannot do this. It will wow audiences, keep it simple and focus on presentation. Both books are available from Amazon for around a fiver each, so there is no reason not to have them.

It seems like you've just bought 'gaff tricks' till now.. No use if someone hands you a deck of cards.. So follow some of the advice above.. I would wholeheartedly recommend John Bannon's Smoke and Mirrors after you've got down with a bit of cardistry.
