Scientific party tricks

Here's psychologist Richard Wiseman's top ten science-based party tricks for the festive season:

A couple of them I recall from childhood magic books! Especially the balancing forks.

And as long as we're on the subject of Professor Wiseman, here's a fantastic optical illusion from his blog:

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

I had no idea about the candle and the baking soda and vinegar... cool!

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

That's my favourite too! I love how he pours the CO2 all the way down the cardboard slope at the end. Amazing.

I tried that and it didn't work. Perhaps because I used malt vinegar. Or perhaps I didn't use enough baking powder. Bah.

I also tried the one with the match that relights the candle without touching it. Didn't work either. Perhaps I should have used a normal candle instead of a tea light candle. Double bah!

I think it needs to be white vinegar and use plenty of baking soda. I tried it and it works a treat.

Has anyone been watching the Science of Scams website that Derren Brown has been plugging? There are some interesting little science tricks on there, especially the Psi-wheel thing.

Aint science fun, boys and girls? :)
