A guide to buying silk (please?)

Postby Mr Grumpy » Dec 26th, '09, 20:44

Merry Christmas to those of you who are reading this at Christmas (which is when I'm posting it).

To everyone else... hello! (And, quite possibly, happy Hallowe'en.)

I want to buy a silk to vanish with my TT. When I've owned silks a few years back I had problems with them not lasting as long as I would like (I think they got fraid or something, I can't remember exactly), and more importantly with not fitting into my TT. I have small hands and have to use a 'lady size' TT, so either I have to vanish a very small hanky (which of course won't look great) or, preferably, I buy a TT that compresses very small.

Can anyone help? Perhaps someone could post a guide to buying silks? [:--)

(I searched for the word 'silk' on this site and read through about fifteen posts and couldn't find the answer to the question, so if this has already been dealt with elsewhere I apologise, but I did look...)

if you are using a small tip, that wont take a silk, try a bigger tip.

never leave the silk in the tip, because the threads snap, and the silk perishes.

use a silk ribbon,or mini streamer, rather than a silk

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

from experience I've found that indian silk (cheaper to buy) is finer so a larger size can be used with a TT however the play off is they don't last as long. Go for a higher denier (diameter of silk fiber) just like the ones available from most magic dealers) for stronger colours and longer life, but again the play off is you'll only get away with a smaller size silk for the same size TT.
Depending on what your presenting ribbons or TT streamers make for a very impresive reveal.
Hope this helps

Diamond Silks

I use diamond cut silks along with a longer "king size" TT. The silk looks just that much more impressive, when you pull it out, because of its 18" length, I think. However, it depends on what you do.

Thanks for the responses. If I just pop down to one of the magic shops in London will they have something at least reasonably good? I suspect they will.

You want 5mum silk, a 9 inch 5mum silk will fit your TT and if you take care of it will live a nice long life.
