Performance dvds

Postby chrisli » Dec 28th, '09, 23:15

Hi I'm relatively new to magic and I've never actually seen a full magic performance or show. I live in an area where magic does not seem to exist (which is probably actually good for me because i will have not have any competition).
Theres so many trick dvd's out there and rarely do you get to see magicians performing in a show.
I was wondering if there are any dvd's or videos out there that just have performances or shows with no explanation of tricks. I find it inspiring watching professionals but trick videos have very limited performances.

Thanks,

Chris

Aargh! It's so frustrating to watch non-instructional magic DVDs as a magicician. Don't you just want to climb into the TV set (or monitor) and search the magician's pockets, shake them (or offer to buy them a pint) and demand that they tell you how it's done?

Though I have to say, who doesn't love a good show?

And I have to also say, when I watch the likes of Bill Malone, I tend to think 'How did he get away with saying that?' or 'How can he be so damned funny?' rather than 'How did he make that second ace turn into an elephant?' or whatever...

Not sure if you're into mentalism but the DVD "Get Nyman" by Andrew Nyman has both a performance dvd and an explanation so you can watch his great presentation of all the effects in his show and then learn them.

Some of the effects may be a little advanced for a beginner but, if you find them too hard, save them for when you believe your technique and presentation has improved enough for you to do the tricks justice.

Mr. Nyman's performance is wonderful and the effects are rather baffling. :)

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

I get fed up of shelf after shelf of magicians explaining effects I have no interest in. I would love to be able to get performance tapes of Blackstone, Daniels, Henning - all the greats, and perhaps compilations of all the guys who have great acts, even if they do not have a full two hour show.
It would be a wonderful inspiration, instead of watching boring effects for a rent-a-crowd audience.

this is one thing that youtube tends to be quite good for, there's a ton of cliups of Derren, Paul Daniels, Tommy Wonder, just about anyone that you can think of. Have a little search and see what you can find.

Not sure if it's still available, but Simon Drake's Secret Cabaret DVD is pretty good.
