What am I to you ? And What do you think you are ?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

I think very few people use the word "Trick" in front of specs in any form of illusion (magic, mentalism - whatever) now a days. Usually its more along the lines on "I wana show you something", or "Hey look here". or "You guys wana try somthing a bit strange".... thats seems to be the most popular way to describe things currently anyway. No matter what your performing.

I know.......... and, to be honest, I only ever use that patter if someone specifically asks if I know any card tricks. I'd certainly never be the first to introduce that word into a presentation.

But, in all seriousness, the whole argument seems a bit trite doesn't it? Magicians/Mentalists - what's the difference!? (I wonder if I'll ever get my tongue dislodged from my cheek now?)

its only when you tell people that mentalism is magic for grown ups...you should never say that on forums, people explode if they dont agree on that one...

its true though...i mean, who believes that you can really make a silk dissapear eh?! science can't prove it...

there you go...2for1...

Don't get me wrong, i love a good envelope me. And if i were to purchase said items of stationery, where better than Rymans?

Trouble is, they're all a bit papery and therefore prone to creases. Since i do my magic on the fly.....that is i dont do this for a job......i think it would look odd to pull out envelopes, and if i did the envelopes would look very sorry for themselves. Presentation innit?

I say trick. I mean effect. It sounds so much more intelligent......

Grimshaw's right - when I started performing magic (yes, magic) I always had a pack of cards on me to practice my shuffles, sleights, etc. And that has pretty much carried on til today even though I've moved almost completely away from card magic - most of my jackets will have a deck in one of the pockets (not always complete, granted!), so it's dead easy to pull it out and show people something - even something like an impromptu memory feat or ACAAN, etc is impressive enough to show people you're not just doing the old uncles's '21' trick, etc. Then, I've always got my trusty Assassin wallet on me to go a bit deeper, if needed!

And also, from a presentation point of view, I find it more believable to say "I always carry a pack of cards with me" rather than say "I always carry a stack of envelopes with me" - people might think I'm some sort of stationery fetishisht!! Although - grabbing a single sheet of paper and performing a variation on the old dead/alive routine can slay a whole room - trust me, I've tried it when put on the spot with absolutely nothing on me!!

Having said all of that.........(and I did post something on this a couple of months ago)..... does anyone else find a visit to Ryman's strangely exciting? All those possibilities................... :-)

none of my non-magician friends ever carry around packs of cards with 'em...not one...

"hmmm..keys...phone...wallet...oooh! forgot me cards!"...

i've got friends who have notepads, pens, stamps and envelopes in their man bags though...and they're not in the trade...

:D

MENTALISM Mind reading effects that are propless which always get a good reaction. If I'm going out with said Man Bag I may have an Imp devices If I intend to perform... Its seems very natural to carry a notebook around :)

As soon as I started using Imp pads I used to spend ages in rymans choosing...which colour should I Have this time :P.. Ahhh fun times x
