The Google Phone

Postby kolm » Jan 5th, '10, 20:15

So the Google Phone is here. And as expected I'm underwhelmed. It's an HTC manufactured phone running an operating system that's been around for a while now so is nothing new nowadays

Nothing industry smashing, it looks like just another phone. I'd like to get my hands on it to try it out to see if it really is as good as the hype, but as with the Kindle you can only buy it online so that's gonna be unlikely. The reviews aren't so praising, either

Is anybody else excited by this? Anyone going to buy one?

I'm hoping to find one in a US store while on holiday for a bit of a play (same with the kindle but I won't hold my breath).

Not exactly ground breaking but time will tell. Lot's of geeky people like me will probably consider it as an alternative to the Blackberry to avoid owning a fashion accessory from Apple but I am not sure it will have the mass market appeal of the iPhone.

Careful with buying US phones to bring back to the UK. If it's not quadband, it won't work on both sides of the pond.

They'll be shipping to the UK "soon"

I've just read the Q&A transcript at the end of the conference (thank you Guardian), and it seems that it's not meant to be an iPhone killer and it wasn't designed by Google engineers; it's just running Google Android software and it's being sold by them directly

What a letdown. I'll be interested in playing with it if I have the chance, but it seems no better than the iPhone. Yet another HTC smartphone :(

i can't stand the iphone...£40 odd quid a month to do what? use apps for a few days and then buy new ones...as if magic wasnt bad enough...

and to watch the iplayer on that screen for any length of time? nah...not for me...

i like my items seperate, if i lose one, not so bad..if i lost the iphone..thats it..all gone...

its like touch screen music players - admittedly i do have the new zen xfi2 thing, but i remember the days when you could skip tracks without having to touch the screen and look at it...you could just 'feel' where to prod (phnar)...

grumble over...

Thanks for the warning but was not planning to buy one! Just want a play so I can see whether it is worth getting one in the future.

The Kindle is another matter though. The more I think about an eReader the more I want one but a part of me says "Don't buy one retard, they'll be half the price and 5 times better in 12 months".

I'm wondering if the rumoured apple tablet can be used as an e-reader. That'll be interesting if it can be...

The new Google Nexus was reviewed in the Telegraph today. The reviewer seemed to like it quite a lot.

The Nexus has more computing power, better screen resolution, and a better camera, but the iPhone has lots more memory and lots more apps available. As you might expect, the iPhone is better at coordinating and playing music like an iPod. The Nexus seems a bit better at connecting to the internet.

Import from US now, or wait for UK contract deals?

I'm a bit skeptical when reading Nexus reviews: press members who went to the launch event were handed one for free. I listened to a review on radio 5 t'other night where the reporter was practically salivating over it because she got it for free

The simple matter is, the two are pretty much comparable. I can't say about the usability about the Nexus, but specification wise there isn't enough difference for me to get excited about. It's certainly not going to make much of a dent on iPhone sales, in any case

The Nexus One certainly looks better than the iPhone on paper. I quite like the look of it, although Mandrake's phone is looking very appealing, too.

The Nexus One seems to be an improvement on the iPhone in all areas with the exception of the number of apps. But seeing as a good 90% of iPhone apps are complete c*** (not the best), I think this is closer than it may appear.

As someone whom deals with HTC handsets all day, I'm pretty pleased with what they have done so far. As far as I can tell, the Nexus seems a bit prettier than usual HTC fare and has a newer version of the OS. And that's about it until I can get my hands on one through work (and I will, briefly...)
