Hi folks...
Over the last few days I've been thinking about learning some other styles of magic. I'm only very new to cards and the cups and balls (never given a proper performance of the latter) so not looking to take on too much at once, but I'd like to know something.
The Royal Road to Card Magic seems to be recommended as the best book to get for those wanting to learn card tricks. Are there similar "must have" type books, "bibles" if you will for other areas of magic?
For example:
Coin magic.
Dinner table magic. (sugar cubes, knives, glasses, napkins, maybe a mix of effects that can be performed with or without prior preparation)
Cups and Balls.
General magic (this'd probably include some card magi, coin magic and so on)
Mentalism.
... and anything else I've missed.
It could be useful if we can get a book or two for each of the various main areas of magic that a beginner might want to start in. Things that will suit a beginner with no tricks at all and still be a reference book for many years to come would be the ideal book to suggest.
Once the thread has run for a bit I'll collate the answers in a new post and, if people/mods think it worthwhile, it could be made a sticky or become a go-to reference for people wanting to know where to start.
We could probably include DVDs too... modern tech and all that.
It might actually be worth figuring out a "buy this one first" option and then "try this if you want another one after that" to follow it up.
I look forwards to hearing what you've got to suggest on this.
