Costco Membership

Postby Wishmaster » Jul 28th, '09, 20:14

Just in case this is of any use to anyone here

I work for the NHS and emailed Costco to ask about membership after reading threads mentioning cheap bikes for sale. They said if I take my NHS ID badge and utility bill, I can join.

Membership is currently £25 +VAT per annum and that gets you and your spouse/partner a card each.

Their application form lists the following criteria for membership...
Current or Retired Employee of:
Banking/Finance
Civil Servant
Education
Fire/Rescue
In-Sewer-Ants :P
Local Government
Medical/Health Service
Police Force
Post Office
Airline

Qualified As:
Chartered Architect
Optician
Chartered/Civil Engineer
Pharmacist
Chartered Surveyor
Qualified Accountant
Dentist
Solicitor/Barrister/Magistrate/Advocate

Hope that helps.

Costco do a delicious carrot cake. I could easily go mad in their bakery department. They should put warnings up.

you can just get a membership if you are none of the above but you have to wait until la certain time... let the other (apparantly more importnat) customers go in first

Are you sure? I thought that members were allowed in to shop from a certain time; before that time, it's trade only.

Bicycle cards used to be around £11 for a brick of 12, though they may have gone up now.

If you go in the day, possibly saturday being the best, then they have a lot of sample stalls. And the cafe place at the end is fantastic. A hotdog and drink for something ridiculous like £1.22, all of the food is really cheap.

To be qualified for a Costco membership here in the States you need only to pay the fee. Other than that it sounds like they are ran the same way there as they are here. I have yet to find playing cards of any kind there though.

Strange. I was told that the reason Costco sell Bikes in the UK rather than any other brand is because they buy in bulk in the US and ship them over, along with many other items.

I'm not a member of Costco, but I am in Makro. Originally signed up when I was more or less a civil servant, but have stayed on now that I'm freelance and self-employed. Their membership rules are pretty open, and even if you can't claim to be in any sort of business you can still join as a private member for a nominal fee.

I've never noticed cards in Makro, but they certainly have lots of good stationery!
