Same crowd, new closer

Postby KingJeux. » Dec 1st, '09, 20:28

I got booked again for the same crowd from a year ago, and although most of the tricks won't be remembered and can be recycled, I doubt the closer can? Last year I tried out a newspaper prediction from sankey.. which went over pretty rediculously, so I don't know if I could top it. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for a way around this? or maybe a comparable trick? I'm lost

What sort of magic is your routine and what kind of atmosphere is it?

I can't remember what the effect is called or who it is by, but the one where you have different colours taped underneath three chairs, or numbers or anything, and you predict which volunteer will sit on which chair. Someone must know the one I mean, thats a similar sort of area to a newspaper prediction and is probably one of my favorite prediction effects.

If its got a name like "predicting chairs" I'm going to look like a fool for not remembering it.

It's a restaurant/ banquet for about 60 people. That would be a good trick but these situations have arranged seating which kinda defeats it I guess.

No, it certainly doesn't have to be mentalism. That trick just worked really well for the setting. Although it was a nice spin on the rest of the night that was mostly just cards.

For some reason the idea of putting a prediction underneath a chair has sprung to mind, although I'm not sure what you could predict

Gazzo's Tossed out Deck

Two closers that work well for me in that setting

If you can get a copy of Harry Anderson's Magic square lecture notes, definitely do that; it's a great version.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

A good number prediction can work well as a finisher.

Will you kindly tell us the name of the SANKEY effect?

Some potential closers (non card) that come to mind would be as follows:

Weather or not by Devin Knight if Golf is popular where you perform.

Casino Royal by Larry Becker if you like gambling themed effects

Get a Clue by Jeff Bloom if your audience will be familiar with this classic
board game.

None of these fall into the realm of IMPOSSIBLE or psychic like a newspaper prediction. For example, Get a clue is 1 out of 324. Casino Royal is a 1 out of thousands as is Weather or not. Casino Royal does not involve as many spectators as the other two. It revolves around one person seelcting a casino, making a wager, and another playing the game. Weather or not is a 3 person effect while get a clue can involve upto 7.
In the mentalism portion of my act, I choose one of the three above. Check forums for reviews.

For the record, I believe there is a trick along those lines in banachek's pre thoughts?

If its mainly cards, why not have some kind of prediction of exactly what cards helpers chose, etc. under someones chair. Could be difficult, could be hard, depending what kind of card tricks you were doing. Failing that, why not try something very visual? I thinking Jay Sankey. :D
