Counting change prediction

Postby Eshly » Jan 11th, '10, 17:27

I saw an effect recently at my college when a magician. He did a variety of effects; Chop Cup, card routines, Coin Matrix; but I asked if he knew any Mentalism and he showed me something which I find both impressive and confusing.

He took out a small bit of card, and an equally small brown envelope. Said he was going to guess how much change I had on me; and then appeared to write something something down on the back of the card.
Now at this stage, I was fully expecting a swami -but there was people around so I played along- and he sealed up the envelope and handed it to me.

We counted my money (£28.70) and he had it exactly right... but he never touched the envelope. That's what confuses me, I even offered it back to him for him to open... and he refused it; instead asking me to open it and read the card.

Does anyone know where such a trick can be learnt? Because that's a very good one :)

that's an awful lot of change - must have weighed your pockets down to your ankles :!:

Sounds like you've missed out a phase & not remembered it to me otherwise he's really psychic :!:

I included my cash as well as my coins.

And no, I have NOT missed out a phase... that's why I'm so puzzled.

Did you tell him that you were going to write the paper money amount too?

If you didn't and he still nailed it 100%... WOW!

I didn't say that before hand, by the time I said I had mostly cash he had written it in the envelope (supposedly).

My view is it MUST be a switch somehow, because he got it EXACTLY right.

maybe he watched you buy his ticket for the show with a tenner leaving you £8.70 in change and then seen you had a twenty in the envelope he could then wait and spring it on you near the end as if your in watchin the show chances are your money wont change.

Give it a couple of weeks and this 'technique' will probably be available as a theory11 DVD for ONLY $30.00

Did he get you to write the amount down after you'd counted the money?

Certainly sounds like a puzzler if it happened as you said! What was his name...... we should book him for the TM Xmas bash!

His name was Tom (seriously) and no, I did not write anything down. The interesting thing is he was the only person to write anything down, and he seems to have done it BEFORE my money was ever counted. Even I did not know how much money I had.

here's my point...

buying lots of stuff and constantly looking out for the next thing, though it grabs us all when we start...at some point, you have to stop and realise something...

that simplicity and working on your own stuff is far more rewarding...this guy...he's done something that messed with you...don't go and try and "work it out" so you can go and do the exact same thing...

go out there, and do your own thing...your own way...forget all about this guy - other than a small inspiration towards what mentalism should kinda look like...

Eshly, just enjoy the magic for what it is. There's no need to try reverse engineering everything that you see. You can't know everything and you're never likely too, nobody can.

To be perfectly honest with you, you'd be pretty upset if you found someone trawling the web for ideas on how you did an effect that you'd spent months on. So I think it's wrong to go spending too much time trying to figure this out.

Learn the basics and stop trying to do every trick going. You'll never get anywhere by doing that. People have spent years perfecting routines, you really can't expect to get it all down in a couple of months. Concentrate on one thing at a time and stick to it.
