Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

[/quote]Have you ever heard of the idea that the effect is important, not the method?

iv heard you generally like the effect and not the method or like the method but not the effect. And your right it is all about the reactions! no point knowing the secret if you only have yourself to perform for! there I can agree with you.
There are times when I would use self working tricks like when there's heat on the hands or there's one guy persistently glaring at your hands and wont even look up to acknowledge your presence in those situations nothing better could be used. As for RRTCM the writing style doesn't bother me and I know there are tricks waiting to be developed. I remember my favourite one was “now you see it” after an amateur magician had shown me when I was in glasgow. After speaking to him he recommended RRTCM and thus I went to the book shop . I spent a year or so going through all of them to get a basic idea of the works picked the ones tat stood out and dumped the rest. the way I see it if you don't like the effect then your not going to enjoy performing it and if your going to spend months/years developing a trick to a standard you want/need to like the effect yourself. otherwise where's the pay-off it would be like eating brussel sprouts every day for every meal just to stay alive to allow you to eat sprouts better. And better. And better.
ECT and EATCT are books I need to own myself really. I do tend to learn easier when using DVD's though.

Dog Eared Deck Plus, by Simon Lovell is a brilliant resouce, I picked it up for £2.50, however to echo someone else..No-one has ever come up to me and offered that I use their cards.

Im suprised Simon Lovell isnt mentioned more on these pages..H'es amazingly funny and his magic is relevant, particularly with the "cool" street magic fraternity...

Though I get the impression most arent old enough to use his bar magic effects

Ooooo let me clear that up fellas. I don't think the book is dated, i rather like it. Marting said he found it "almost tacky", which i presumed to mean dated. And thinking about it now, I'm not entirely sure why i presumed that.

I was introduced to Simons Million Dollar Card Magic DVD via this forum. You are spot on, he gets surprisingly few mentions.

His sense of humour takes a bit of getting used to but he is a good teacher and has some excellent stuff.

+1

Million Dollar Card Magic has some amazing effects.. I also love his Office Animal and Party Animal videos.. His style is unique and it's great to have so much variety in one's magic..

99% of my material fits the bill. Check out http://www.paulgordon.net/trickdemos.html for video demos of my work from my books and dvds.

I agree with Paul Gordon's Powerful impromptu Magic. It's full of no-"non-sense" card effects that would fit directly on your repertoire. Everything is useful on this video!
