I'm another one for recommending a creative zen. I have one and used it exstensively over the last few years however, I wish there was a better way of putting music on it because mine has crashed a few times because I pulled out the chord when it says it wasn't docked like you're supposed to but it still says please wait for ages so I have to reset it and then spends a while rebuilding the library and there also aren't many docking stations available for non ipod mp3 players but I put mine through my pc speakers instead

In my opinion the only disadvantage with iPods is the poor sound quality. And given I only listen to my iPod outside when there's cars zooming past me, that's a non-issue

For those attacking iPods, if you've tried them and they're not for you that's cool. But personally I find that Apple make some of the most usable stuff that's out there, with designs that have obviously been thought about

Sure they break, I've had more than my fair share of iPods fail. But nothing a replacement can't fix :)

But I'm a big Apple fan, and there's a lot of brand loyalty going on here

I use a Zen Stone, and it is brilliant. Four GBs memory is loads for me, as I don't listen to music. I store a few audio books on it, and it is great for listening back. It is a very small light unit, easy to use. It has a radio (which I use to listen to matches on the move, news etc), and it has a dictaphone which can tape hours of stuff - this is essential for me.
It cost next to nothing, and I can put my shows on it when I need to. Its perfect.

do yourself a favour and invest in a pair of in ear headphones the ones that come with mp3 players don't block out background noise but don't have them in while crossing the road

+1000

I use these kind of headphones while listening to music on the way to work (where I go by subway) and you listen to almost no background noise. And I will second the comment on removing them while crossing roads

I use these : http://www.hifiheadphones.co.uk/sennhei ... -1168.html (not affiliated to the site in any way it's the first UK link that Google found).
They are great for the price.

You should try an Archos. They have loads of memory ( up to 160GB ) and aren't too expensive for what you get.

Got the sansa fuze and love it. Thanks for the suggestions.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Creative Vision M here. Got the creative jukebox thing the size of a portable CD player when it was the only hard disk mp3 player on the market and, though the comments about usability are pretty accurate, I would have to have a really good reason for having anything other than a creative.

My greatest regret in having an iPhone 3GS is that I now use that as an MP3 player instead of my Creative one to avoid carrying two lumps of electronics.

 which is, really, the real pleasure of music surely...that the aural pleasure (steady!) is amplified (pun intended) via a decent sound quality...why have beautiful music if only to sully it with sh*tty music players?

zen x-fi2 man myself...i've had 5 people who are all i-fools admit through gritted teeth that my player sounds loads better...*smug*

I see what you mean, but I mostly use my iPod to listen to podcasts, or listen to music in a background-music fashion when walking around outside

If I'm actively listening to music, I do it at home where I have some half-decent headphones plugged into an iMac :)
