Sympathetic Coins..

Postby donpisci » Jan 27th, '10, 19:21

Hi guys,

I've seen a version of this trick without the need for a handkerchief. I've read through Bobo looking for it, but can't find it. I've guessed that the 2nd version of sympathetic coins given in Bobo could be done without a handkerchief, but would like to know where I could find any other methods, or am I on the right track?

Thanks

Hi Donpisci. My copy of Bobos is at my brother and laws at the moment so im not sure im thinking of the right effect. The Sympathetic Coins uses 4 coins, 2 cards and a hankerchief, and 3 of the coins pass through the handkerchief to join the 4th, yes ?
If ive got the correct effect then the one you saw would probably have been a Coin Matrix, which doesnt use a hanky. The original was invented around 1960 (so is not in Bobo) by Al Schneider and uses 4 cards and 4 coins. :)

ps. Many of the Matrix effects are scattered throughout the literature, however the Worlds Greatest Magic series has a dvd devoted to the effect and a few versions are explained there along with Als original.

I don't use a handkerchief - I use a pass to vanish the two coins. I originally learnt this from Bruce Elliott's "Classic Secrets of Magic".

I'd recommend you try Bobo's suggestion of kneeling on the floor and performing this on the carpet. It works especially well for young children, who think the coins travel through the floor!

The original Sympathetic Coins was by a chap named Yank Hoe. It's in Bobo's book.
