universal remote control with a twist...

Postby Beardy » Feb 11th, '10, 23:32

Hey guys!

I'm after a universal remote control, but one that can not only control televisions, but such things as projecters as well? I know they exist, I just can;t find one! No doubt it is really obvious!

Thanks for your help in advance!

Love

Chris

I use a Logitech Harmony 555 Universal Remote Control (about £40). It controls my tv, amp, dvd, sattelite box, cd player. You program it through your pc and once it's set up a single button press will turn on tv/amp/sat box, another button turns dvd on/changes source on amp and tv, etc... I haven't tried it on my projector but I don't see any barriers to it working with that either.
The only downside is that for everything to change over nicely - all your equipment has to be on standby.... which isn't always preferable in this green age.
Logitech has a whole range of universal remotes, but this one got a good review in the whathifi/tv mags. Philips also do some great ones (with lovely colour touch screens - ooooh!) and amazon sells the lot. Richer Sounds also usually have a good selection.

Sounds good! Problem though is that I want this to work on a projector that I don't have access to.

Think "having fun in the middle of a university lecture"...

;)

Would that still work?

Most of those 'universal' type remotes work by entering codes that are associated with the device you're trying to control.

If you can find out the make/model of the projector you should be able to find the code on the Logitech (or whoevers) website and enter it into the remote control unit.

IIRC, there are usually multiple codes for each type of device but you shouldn't need direct access to the projector in order to pair it up.

There are also cheap universal remote controls you can get from the local pound shop that just spray out all the different known codes for the button you're pressing.

You can buy zappers that will turn of TVs, they might work on projectors too

But don't expect your lecturer to like it. Or your colleagues who are trying to actually learn. Or your university. Who might kick you out. Would it be funny then?

A tech blog thought it would be funny too to wander around CES (a massive tech conference) with such a device a couple of years ago; and the writer who did it is now banned for life

I was watching a presentation in one of the meeting rooms at work recently, and began thinking about doing some nonsense with Powerpoint, where your image would keep getting captured when you tried to move on to further slides while standing in the beam of light.

Wasn't this discussed here some time back?

Magic Wand Remote Control

Bit of fun, but don't know if it meets all your requirements.

Compatibility

The magic wand is compatible with any infra-red device, including televisions, Sky, digibox, and stereos.
