Freek out!

Postby monsterz » Apr 5th, '05, 16:49

i was just wondering has anyone ever REALLY freeked a spectator out with a trick? i was just wondering because as i was looking at a "time machine" trick on penguin magic, and it says

Warning: This effect is too strong for use on all audiences. Some spectators experience temporary socially-inappropriate FREAKING OUT. Others FREAK OUT permanently.

i was just wondering if anyone has ever done this, just like to hear some stoires :P

For all you haunted key fans then you may like the 'Spirit lock' trick

http://www.coopermagic.co.uk/prodshow.a ... code=CU102

Not cheap, but i have this and it is very good. I am sure that your favourite magic store would be able to get one for you. Nice item if you have the budget.

The Web always really freaks people out: even the conservative British public have a bit of a scream when they turn their hand over!

That's what a trick should be - very easy, can be done anywhere and always gets a great reaction.

tom provided me with a pandoras lock and keys, so i use my hunted key to choose the key that will open the lock which realy freekds most people out.

the key looks the same as mine and the lock featured is probably of the same design as david davals master padlock so should be a great addition to any spychic / spiritulist part of your show.

I've found the same with the Web - even those who say that they don't mind spiders still freak out!

The Web works a treat but PLEASE make sure you don't do this for or near anyone with arachnophobia or indeed a heart condition. A sudden, nervous jolt (even if they are only watching) can be VERY dangerous and those with true phobias can be greatly distressed...you'll feel awful and others won't be too pleased with you.

Yes the web can risky, i think the instructions issue a warning.

Call me cynical, but I suspect this may be a marketing ploy to get you to buy the Time Machine from Penguin. I don't think I've seen a warning for it from any other stockist.

On the 'freeek!' question though, I must agree that the Web would take it. I don't own it, but I've seen just a normal plastic spider make people go completely nuts. It's dead funny, but be very careful.

As an experiment, pretend you've just seen a spider run along the furniture/floor/ceiling and tell someone nearby. Their reaction will be an extremely dumbed-down version of them finding a spider on their hand. EXTREMELY dumbed-down.

Anyone else feeling REALLY devious right now...?

I don't actually think that this is that strong, IMHO. I mean, sure, it's magic and all that, but it's not a surprise ending, and it's definitely not worth $100. I mean, think what you could get for $100, and then think whether a funny watch is better than all that put together.

Get something better...

Kati

N.B. No, I don't have this. I watched the demo video a lot.

In hibernation but half awake - will stick my nose in every so often!

The time machine watch is a clever piece of kit, but I would put the difficulty level at a 4-5/5. The actual physical handling of the effect is easy, but your patter has to excellent to pull this off. If you can get the patter right, you can perform miracles with it. You can even get the spec to hold it if you are brave.
Having said that, I've got one, and have only tried it once. Not because it is a bad product, but because it just wasn't me. I suppose that if you are thinking of spending a lot of money on one, it has to fit into everything else you do perfectly. It's just lucky I didn't buy mine (will probably be putting it on the magic for sale/swap section soon).

Back to The Web - the instructions do contain the same warning and yes, it is advisable to adhere to these in this case. I recall my 16 year old son scrambling across the living room floor when he saw it - hyserical for the family and the fastest we'd seen him move for years.

Seriously though - do select your victim carefully!

I once did the muscle pass to a guy in a pub, admittedly he had a few to drink, but not too many, he almost dropped his pint and just ran out the pub saying I was weird and freeky! :)
